X-Men ’97 Cast: Who’s Who In Season 1, Episode 1, From Wolverine To Professor X?

X-Men 97 cast

Marvel Studios’s X-Men ’97 has finally arrived on Disney+, and it rules. Whether you were a fan of the original X-Men: The Animated Series, or were curious about this nostalgic throwback, you’re going to have an absolute blast watching the animated adventures of Marvel’s merry mutants.

But since this is a reboot of a series from several decades ago — the original aired from 1992-1997 — you might be wondering who is in the cast. Is it the same folks who recorded voices back in the ’90s? Or do we have a bunch of celebs taking over, teasing who may eventually play the X-Men in live-action in the MCU?

The answer, thankfully, is the former, for the most part. The original voice cast returns to once again portray the classic X-Men lineup of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, and more. That said, there are a few exceptions and additions here, new folks who have joined the roster for the 2024 edition of X-Men.

So with that in mind, let’s get into who is in the X-Men ’97 cast, who returned, and who may not survive the experience.

X-Men ’97 Season 1, Episode 1 “To Me My X-Men” Cast: Who’s Who In The Cast?

First, let’s talk about the returning cast in the season premiere. Alison Sealy-Smith is back as Storm, after playing the voice of the character in the original show. Cal Dodd also returns as Wolverine from X-Men: TAS, as well as in the Marvel vs. Capcom video games. Lenore Zann returns as Rogue, and George Buza is back as Beast. Fun fact: Buza also cameoed in the 2000 X-Men movie as a trucker.

As for the other X-Men, Ray Chase takes over for Cyclops after the previous voice, Norman Spencer, sadly passed away in 2020. Similarly, David Hemblen, who voiced Magneto, passed away in 2020, and the character is now voiced by Matthew Waterson. David Fox, voice of Master Mold and the Sentinels, passed away in 2021, and Eric Bauza — aka the voice of Mickey Mouse — has taken over in his stead.

Jennifer Hale is the voice of Jean Grey, taking over from Catherine Disher. However, Hale was the voice of Jean Grey in Wolverine and the X-Men; and Disher is still in the cast, playing the voice of the X-Men’s human liaison Val Cooper.

J.P. Karliak, who might be best known as the voice of Boss Baby on the Netflix series, has taken over for Morph from Rob Robin. While Rubin does not appear in this episode, he will be voicing President Robert Edward Kelly in a later episode.

As for Gambit, that’s a character that has changed hands multiple times. The voice was initially Chris Potter from 1992-1996, then replaced by Tony Daniel in 1997. Potter will be back on the show, but this time he’ll be the voice of Nathan Summer, aka Cable. On X-Men ’97, the voice of Gambit is A.J. LoCascio.

Continuing to work our way down the cast list, Holly Chou takes over voicing Jubilee from Alyson Court, who will show up later on as Abcissa. Philip Akin is not back as Bishop; instead, he’s voiced by Isaac Robinson-Smith. Lawrence Bayne, who previously voiced Cable, is now the voice of Carl Denti. Todd Haberkorn subs in for Barry Flatman as Henry Gyrich. And Gavin Hammon takes over Bolivar Trask from Brett Halsey.

One voice actor that does not return? Cedric Smith, who was the voice of Professor X in the original series. He’s been replaced by Ross Marquand, aka Aaron from The Walking Dead, as well as the guy who has done the voice of Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, as well as Red Skull and Ultron on What If…?
