This is Comic Book Club News for July 23, 2024.

Best-Selling Graphic Novels Of Spring 2024 Revealed:

The best-selling graphic novels of the first quarter of 2024 have been revealed, and no surprise here: it’s turtles all the way down.

Per ICv2, IDW’s hardcover collection of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, which was originally published in 2022, was the top seller in the period between January 2024 and April 2024, both in terms of units sold and dollars earned.

That wasn’t the only Turtles book on the lists, though. Last Ronin: The Lost Years came in at number three on units sold, and number two on dollars earned. The Director’s Cut version of Last Ronin also charted on dollars earned, at number five.

As for other books, Void Rivals Volume 1 hit number two on units sold from Image Comics. Marvel brought in the number four and five books with Predator vs. Wolverine and Ultimate Invasion. And DC Comics nabbed six through eight with Watchmen, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Batman: Year One Deluxe. And one point of clarification, Watchmen was the $19.99 trade collection, not the $9.99 Compact Comic which was released in June.

To finish up the list, number nine was Titan Comics’s Conan the Barbarian, and number 10 was House of X / Powers of X from Marvel.

But hey, it’s the Turtles world, we’re just living in it.

Mad Cave Studios Teases Industry-Shaking Secret For Comic-Con:

This week kicks off the annual San Diego Comic-Con, an event where basically every entertainment company screams at the top of their lungs, all at the same time, for four and a half days. Because of that, it’s extremely hard to parse through the noise and find out what actually is a big deal, and what’s just so much marketing language.

Enter Mad Cave Studios, which is certainly promising something big with their panel titled “Mad Cave’s Industry-Shaking Comics Secret Revealed!

So what is Mad Cave’s “industry-shaking secret?” Here’s what they plug via the panel blurb, via The Beat:

“The biggest creators in comics are joining forces with Mad Cave, and taking comics worldwide! Mad Cave’s most explosive secret will be a secret no more, an on-stage reveal literally centuries in the making. Great stories and characters made expressly for fans everywhere. If you want stories that feel like they were established in your very own imagination, you won’t want to miss this. Also: Absolutely mandatory attendance for journalists, bloggers, and podcasters!”

Mandatory attendance, you say? Okay then. Whatever the secret is, we’ll know after the panel which will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 1:30 pm.

Omnibus App Is Closing:

And in a bummer story to close out the podcast, upstart digital comics app Omnibus is closing.

The news was announced by Omnibus, which explained, “We aren’t growing fast enough and would require a significant amount of external funding to proceed and become sustainable. This is a tough business to achieve that within the current landscape.”

The app was initially launched in May of 2023 as an alternative to ComiXology, given the platform’s issues since the purchase of the brand by Amazon. And while Omnibus snagged a bunch of publishers, without industry-wide buy-in — and specifically Marvel and DC comics, which have their own dedicated digital platforms, as well as ComiXology — it was clearly hard to make a go of things.

As is, users of Omnibus will be able to read their books in-app and download backups until August 21, per a note on the brand’s website. And if you purchased more than $100 worth of comics on the platform, and are unable to download PDFs, you can request a refund.
