On today’s star-packed episode of Marvel‘s What If…? on Disney+, we’re taking the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) back in time to a place it’s never been before: 1602. But how much of the 2000s MCU cast returned for the What If…? Season 2 Episode 8 voice cast?
Before we get to that, this is — once again — a very different mode for What If…? Spoilers here, but loosely based on the comic series Marvel 1602 by Neil Gaiman and Andy Kubert, this takes viewers to a universe where the 21st Century and the 17th Century have gotten jumbled together thanks to an errant time traveler.
The solution to that, thanks to Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) is to take Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) and bring her over to their time, and their branch of the multiverse to try and track down the Forerunner, the mysterious time traveler who is mucking things up. Along the way we get Shakespeare-era takes on Loki, Nick Fury, Hulk, and many more.
Ultimately — and again, spoilers here — it turns out this is a “What If” scenario. In this universe, while Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans in live-action) was fighting Thanos (Josh Brolin) during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, he knocked the time stone off the Infinity Gauntlet, knocking him back in time. Peggy and the assembled heroes are able to send him back that moment, restoring the timeline and resetting it so 1602 happens as normal — aka without all the superheroes.
The last bit finds Peggy stranded in 1602… That is until Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) shows up, and promises he has a story to tell. That story will be told in the Season 2 finale, by the way.
Anywho, what about that cast? As usual for the series, “What If… The Avengers Assembled In 1602?” is a mix of MCU veterans and voice acting veterans, so let’s get to it, shall we?
What If…? Season 2 Episode 8 Cast: Who’s Who In The Cast?
Jeffrey Wright is back as The Watcher (as usual), and Hayley Atwell continues to play Captain Carter, just as she did in Season 1, and in Season 2, Episode 5 – “What If… Captain Carter Fought The Hydra Stomper?”
And a bevy of MCU stars return for this episode. Samuel L. Jackson once again voices Nick Fury, though in 1602 he’s called Sir Fury. Elizabeth Olsen is credited as Wanda Merlin (sung to the tune of “WandaVision” naturally), though she operates just like the Scarlet Witch. Chris Hemsworth voices King Thor Odinson, though surprisingly Cate Blanchett doesn’t appear as Hela, despite having been in the episode prior (and the character briefly appearing in this episode, with no lines).
And yep, you are indeed hearing fan-favorite Tom Hiddleston as the voice of Loki, having a blast and a half this episode after the epic emotional highs and lows of Loki Season 2.
Also MCU? Jon Favreau plays Happy Hogan and also does the voice of the hulked-out The Freak, following up on Season 2, Episode 3 – “What If… Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?” Speaking of Hulks, Mark Ruffalo is the voice of Bruce Banner/Hulk. Paul Rudd returns for the first time this season as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, reprising his role from the Ant-Man and Avengers movies. Sebastian Stan once again voices Bucky Barnes, and as mentioned Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Strange (technically Strange Supreme, but whatever).
Otherwise, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson do not do voices in this episode. Instead, the same voice actors who have previously voiced their characters appear here. That means Mick Wingert does the fast-talking Tony Stark. Josh Keaton is the voice of Steve Rogers, aka Rogers Hood. And Lake Bell is once again Natasha Romanoff.
