Ho, ho, ho, look who has a Christmas Special! It’s Marvel‘s What If…? on Disney+, which goes full-on X-Mas with the latest episode, “What If…Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?” The Season 2 Episode 3 voice cast reunites three of the founding Avengers, as well as guest stars from throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In Season 2, Episode 3, as usual, What If…? is finding a bit of continuity and diverging from it in a way that sends repercussions throughout the universe. Here it’s, uh… Honestly don’t know on that one, other than “What if Justin Hammer tried to escape from prison a little harder?” So essentially this is a semi-sequel to Iron Man 2 that takes place after The Avengers but before the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. But it’s also blatantly a Die Hard parody that mixes in some Hulk-style madness.
In the episode, it’s time for the annual (?) Avengers holiday party. Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) is trying to keep things moving, Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) is making things difficult as his intern. And into the mix enter Justin Hammer, who wants to steal some Hulk blood and become a Hulk. Instead, Happy accidentally becomes a Hulk. And per the title, saves Christmas.
So, who’s who in the voice cast of Season 2, Episode 3? Is Sam Rockwell really back as Justin Hammer? Let’s go!
What If…? Season 2 Episode 3 Cast: Who’s Who In The Cast?
Jeffrey Wright returns this episode as The Watcher, doing a very bad job of posing “what if” questions.
However, the rest of the cast is packed with MCU stars. Jon Favreau does indeed voice both Happy Hogan and the Hulk version of Happy, which is named The Freak. Kat Dennings is back again as Darcy Lewis. Cobie Smulders voices Maria Hill.
But perhaps most excitingly, Sam Rockwell is back as Justin Hammer. Say what you want about Iron Man 2, but Rockwell’s Hammer is one of the greatest characters in the MCU, a billionaire dweeb who desperately wants to be Tony Stark, but will never come close.
As for the Avengers contingent, we do have Chris Hemsworth as the voice of Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the voice of Bruce Banner, and Jeremy Renner as the voice of Clint Barton/Hawkeye. The other Avengers, though, are voice actors, just like how they have been in previous What If…? episodes. Mick Wingert voices Tony Stark/Iron Man, Lake Bell is Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, and Josh Keaton is Steve Rogers/Captain America.
There’s actually one other MCU guest star in this episode, though it’s a stealthy one. Ross Marquand, who folks probably know best on-screen as Aaron on The Walking Dead, is also a skilled voice actor. In fact, he’s previously voiced Red Skull in Infinity War and Endgame and the Ultron sentries in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. He’s also done the voices of Red Skull and Ultron on What If…? And here, he does a pitch-perfect Werner Herzog impersonation as Werner, Avengers Tower’s new AI.
