Marvel‘s What If…? on Disney+ doesn’t do sequels… Other than today’s episode, “What If… Captain Carter Fought The Hydra Stomper?” The half-hour mashes up Captain America: The Winter Soldier with Black Widow, with a dash of Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell). So with that in mind, you might be wondering who is in the voice cast for What If…? Season 2, Episode 5? We’ve got you covered, friend.
Unlike other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) riffs on the animated series, this episode directly follows up on the events of Season 1’s “What If… Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?” While that episode was pretty much the events of Captain America: The First Avenger if Peggy Carter got the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), this episode starts as straight-up The Winter Soldier.
Peggy is teaming up with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson in the movies) to infiltrate a freighter. But what they discover there is Steve Rogers in the Hydra-Stomper outfit, now brainwashed and being used as an assassin. He attempts to kill Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who is in a similar position to where Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce was in, in Winter Soldier. But it turns out in this story, the brainwashed assassin isn’t working for HYDRA — he’s working for the Red Room.
That leads the three heroes to Russia, where they fight Melina (Rachel Weisz) and the assembled Black Widows. Ultimately they win when Steve sacrifices his life… Only for Peggy to get sucked through a portal to the eighth episode of this season, aka 1602. Twist!
With that all in mind, who is who in the voice cast? Is Rachel Weisz indeed back as Melina? Who voiced Scarlet Witch at the end of the episode? Read on for all the answers.
What If…? Season 2 Episode 5 Cast: Who’s Who In The Cast?
Let’s get the big ones out of the way. Yes, that is indeed Rachel Weisz voicing the character of Melina in What If…? Season 2, Episode 5. While she’s more villainous than she was in Black Widow, where she made her on-screen live-action appearance, she’s still Rachel Weisz. Glad they got the actress everyone calls “Mummy” and not a “Dead Ringer.” Those are both Rachel Weisz references. You get it.
The other big one is Elizabeth Olsen, who voices what is credited as Wanda-Merlin in the episode. The mild spoiler here is that’s a version of Scarlet Witch from the upcoming eighth episode of the season, which finds the MCU back in 1602. It’s just a brief scene, but yep, Olsen is doing that voice. So expect her to be back later in the season, as well.
As for the rest of the cast, Hayley Atwell is of course the voice of Peggy Carter, aka Captain Carter. The character is the linchpin of not just this episode, but the whole series. She’s the one character the showrunners have said they’ll make sure to revisit every season. So, Captain Carter: Civil War for Season 3, one would assume?
Other screen stars who voice their characters in the cartoon include Samuel L. Jackson in his brief appearance at the end of the episode as Nick Fury. Frank Grillo returns as Brock Rumlow, clearly more of a hero when Hydra doesn’t corrupt him into the baddie Crossbones. Sebastian Stan plays Bucky Barnes, and good job to Stan for his “old man” voice. And blink and you’ll miss it, but Bernard White reprises his role as Councilman Singh, aka one of the guys on the World Security Council, talking to Bucky on a screen midway through the episode.
Other voices in the episode include, of course, Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, as usual. And two major roles are filled by the voice actors who have been filling them all along on What If…? Lake Bell voices Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. And Josh Keaton voices Steve Rogers, aka The Hydra Stomper.
