The Amazing Spider-Man #40 Review: A Hyperfocused Event

The Amazing Spider-Man #40 review

In The Amazing Spider-Man #40 from Marvel Comics, written by Zeb Wells with art by John Romita Jr., the Gang War event continues.

We reviewed the book on the Stack podcast. But in the interest of highlighting more about the title, here’s a summary of the conversation with our thoughts. And if you prefer the longer audio version, that’s below as well!

The Amazing Spider-Man #40 Review:

Tombstone teams up with Spider-Man and She-Hulk to take down multiple gangs, and try and stop the Gang War event. Meanwhile, the Fisk family enters the fray.

“This is the best Amazing Spider-Man has been in a very long time,” said host Alex Zalben, “and a lot of that is down to focusing on Spider-Man stuff.”

Justin Tyler agreed, calling the Spider-Man/She-Hulk team-up in this issue fun, and love the mix of “high stakes” and fun, goofy elements at the same time.

On that note, Zalben did not like the new Beetle costume introduced in the issue, which gives her a big scary mask and all black costume. That said, he loves “the team of female variants who are villains led by The Beetle.”

“This is a really glorious issue,” said Pete LePage. In particular he shouted out the art, and enjoyed the use of Tombstone in the issue. “This is a fantastic issue… I cannot wait to see what’s going to happen next.”

And spoilers here, but the issue pulls a classic Silence of the Lambs door moment, where you think one member of the Fisk family is showing up, when it’s actually Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, and Typhoid Mary. While Tyler was confused about the continuity, as Mary is currently off-planet in Realm of X, Zalben thought the reveal was “very smart and very well done… I’m glad to enjoy Amazing Spider-Man again.”
