Marvel‘s April feels a little bit like the calm before the storm. Don’t get us wrong, there are plenty of big titles coming from Marvel in April 2024. But at the same time, there are fewer number-one issues than there were in previous months. The Ultimate Universe isn’t releasing a new series until June. And the X-Men are truckin’ along until the inevitable finale, also in June.
But there’s still plenty to like from the publisher — and lots to look forward to. There are two issues of Thor that tie into each other and promise to potentially be some top-tier corporate satire. The Ultimate line does have new issues of Spider-Man, X-Men, and Black Panther. And of course, there’s a new Deadpool title, teeing up Deadpool & Wolverine in July.
Read on for our picks for the top 11 must-buy Marvel Comics you need to add to your comic book haul in April 2024.
1. The Immortal Thor #9
Release Date: April 3, 2024
Al Ewing writes, Ibraim Roberson is on art, and this kicks off one of the wildest ideas in Marvel Comics in a good long while. In fact, while this series has been excellent, putting this issue on the list is a bit more about how it kicks into another issue later on the you can check out below.
2. Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin #1
Release Date: April 3, 2024
J.M. Dematteis returns to a dangling plotline from decades ago as he revisits the Proto-Goblin, the man who was the Goblin before Norman Osborn. These legacy series have been hit or miss, but this seems like an intriguing one.
3. Giant-Size Hulk #1
Release Date: April 3, 2024
Hobo Hulk? Phillip Kennedy Johnson is promising a train fight like no other as the Hulk battles a mysterious, supernatural menace on the railroad, all the live-long day. If anyone can pay off on the Giant-Size premise, it’s Johnson — along with Andrea Broccardo on art — so get hyped.
4. Deadpool #1
Release Date: April 3, 2024
He’s got a movie coming so you know there’s a new Deadpool book hitting stands, too. This time the Merce With a Mouth comes from writer Cody Ziglar, with art by Roge Antonio. There’s also a new villain named Death Grip, whom I’m sure there will be no jokes made about.
5. Fantastic Four #19
Release Date: April 10, 2024
They say “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but Ryan North’s Fantastic Four is already an excellent series of done-in-one weird science adventures. So giving this a noir tone featuring The Invisible Woman for an issue? Sign me up.
6. Ultimate X-Men #2
Release Date: April 10, 2024
The first issue of Peach Momoko’s Ultimate X-Men was as surprising as expected — but not as expected. The actual story played out like a J-horror flick that happens to include versions of X-Men characters we know and love. Given Momoko’s unique style and the intriguing start, I can’t wait for issue #2.
7. Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #2
Release Date: April 10, 2024
Somehow, against all odds, Iman Vellani and Sabir Pirzada’s first miniseries focusing on Ms. Marvel was very, very good. And yet, the first issue of this second mini, which brought Kamala Khan back to Jersey City was… Even better? And the second issue brings in one of the best weird X-Men villains, Mojo? Comics are so back.
8. Roxxon Presents: Thor #1
Release Date: April 17, 2024
Here it is, my most anticipated comic book of the month! Written by Al Ewing with art by Greg Land, after Thor villain the Minotaur gains control of the publishing rights to Thor in the above Immortal Thor, they release their own version of events in this comic. It features Thor versus environmentalists and has the potential to be the most biting corporate satire Marvel has released in ages.
9. Daredevil #8
Release Date: April 24, 2024
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Man Without Fear, this extra-size issue features a main story by Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, as well as back-ups from teams throughout his history, including stories by Ann Nocenti, Erica Schultz, and more.
10. Ultimate Spider-Man #4
Release Date: April 24, 2024
Probably the hottest comic on the stands right now, it’s not that Ultimate Spider-Man is a surprise hit. But it is a surprise how big it is, particularly as the story is mostly about a middle-aged man hanging out with his daughter, while two old guys try to decide what to call their newspaper. That’s comics, baby!
11. Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red #1
Release Date: April 24, 2024
Here’s a joke for you. Why wasn’t Darth Maul at the birthday party when they sang Happy Birthday? He split. Anyway, this is a horror comic by Benjamin Percy and Stefano Raffaele, which is an excellent team. The only downside? This comic should really be half-off.
