Spider-Man Noir Live-Action Series In Development From Lord And Miller

Spider-Man Noir

All right, you hard-boiled turtle slappers, here’s a wild one… A Spider-Man Noir live-action TV series is in development at Amazon from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, as well as Amy Pascal and writer Oren Uziel. And not only that, Nicolas Cage may head from animation to live-action for the lead.

The news was first reported way back on February 9, 2023, by Variety, with the update in December 2023 that Steve Lightfoot was joining as co-showrunner. Now, this week’s issue of Production Weekly lists Spider-Man Noir as in “development.” That’s good news for anyone who is a fan of the 1930s set Spider-Man character, particularly as this sort of forward movement means potentially the series might move closer to reality.

It’s also some good news for Spider-Man fans at a time when things are looking pretty dire otherwise for the Sony productions. Madame Web tanked at the box office. Silk: Spider Society, another live-action series in development at Amazon’s Prime Video has reportedly hit snags too, with the writers room on pause, and former The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang potentially redeveloping the show.

Spider-Man Noir was part of a “Noir” line of comics from Marvel which took the characters you know and love, and transported them back to the 1930s complete with noir tropes. The comics ran through various iterations, but the version you’d potentially see on screen is an extension of the version of the character introduced in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, voiced by Nicolas Cage. Part of a team of Spider-People trapped outside their own universes, Spider-Man Noir talked in exaggerated 1930s speak, and only saw things in black and white.

Given the general lack of info about this project, it’s unknown whether this would tie in to the animated Spider-Verse trilogy of movies, or be its own thing. More on this as it develops in, er, development.
