Will DC Comics be your Valentine? The publisher isn’t necessarily going all in on love this month, but they are releasing one Valentine’s Day-themed collection. And they’re certainly hoping you love all the new comics they’re releasing in February 2024. So let’s break down some of the big ones, shall we?
1. Batman #142-#144
Release Date: February 6, 2024; February 13, 2024; February 20, 2024
A bit of a cheat here, but Batman will be rolling out near weekly issues this month that will tell the past — and future — story of The Joker. Chip Zdarsky has been killing it on Batman, and with Andrea Sorrentino and Giuseppe Camuncoli on art, the “Joker: Year One” storyline has the potential to be a defining tale of the Dark Knight. Or at least, his evil clown opposite.
2. Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum #1
Release Date: February 6, 2024
Response to the actual, long-awaited video game has been decidedly mixed to negative. But a John Layman-written Suicide Squad story where they invade Arkham Asylum sounds fun to me, regardless of what you “gamers” think. Take that, gamers!
3. DC’s How To Lose A Guy Gardner In 10 Days
Release Date: February 6, 2024
Shout out to whoever at DC is pushing through genius pun titles like this and the G’norts Illustrated Swimsuit Special.
4. Birds of Prey #6
Release Date: February 6, 2024
Leonardo Romero is back on art for the final issue of the first arc, as the team takes on an otherworldly enemy on Themyscria. This book has been perfection from front to back, and I can’t wait to see how this story ends.
5. Poison Ivy #19
Release Date: February 6, 2024
G. Willow Wilson and Marci Takara take on the origin of Poison Ivy, and come at it from a (presumably) fresh, feminist perspective through “her own” words. Given the literally and figuratively transformative nature of this title so far, it’ll be exciting to see how the team weaves through the delicate tapestry of continuity with this one.
6. Batman: City of Madness #3
Release Date: February 13, 2024
Christian Ward’s use of the Court of Owls as villains in this miniseries is the best take on the baddies since Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo first introduced them way back in Batman. Add in Ward’s gorgeous art, and this Lovecraft-infused tale of Gotham is a must-buy.
7. Red Hood: The Hill #1
Release Date: February 13, 2024
Jason Todd has gotten a job writing for a preeminent political blog. But with election season coming up, can he… Just kidding. This is actually Todd vs. gentrification, and if it really digs into that premise, it might challenge the most violent member of the Bat-family. Either way, I’m curious to check this one out.
8. Sinister Sons #1
Release Date: February 13, 2024
Peter J. Tomasi and David Lafuente taking on the bad boy sons of Sinestro and Zod? Yes, please. Tomasi killed it back on the Super Sons (aka Damian Wayne and Jon Kent), so it’ll be very exciting to see how he handles the flippy-dippy (technical term) of bringing on the bad guys.
9. Wonder Woman #6
Release Date: February 20, 2024
Is this the #1 must-read title from DC Comics right now? Probably! Though I’ve found the deliberate pace frustrating at times, there’s no denying that writer Tom King has a mastery of the comic form. Daniel Sampere’s art and layouts are stunning. And the back-up stories focusing on Trinity and the Super Sons with art by Belén Ortega are the most fun you can have at the comic shop. Love it, hate it, this is one you have to pick up… And in this issue the bad guys come face to face with Diana. Mild spoilers here, but if future covers are any indication, things don’t go Wonder Woman’s way.
10. Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #5
Release Date: February 20, 2024
This book is delivering on pretty much exactly what you want out of the premise: superheroes versus giant monsters. There’s a nice running emotional thread of Superman and Lois’s relationship, and what will happen next. And will there be more of that in this issue? Probably! Christian Duce’s art is the standout here, particularly the wild monster designs and landscape thrashing.
11. The Flash #6
Release Date: February 27, 2024
This Flash run by Si Spurrier and Mike Deodato Jr. has been the wildest, weirdest, most disturbing one ever. Which, mind you, is a good thing. For too long The Flash has been — sorry — running in place, hitting the same notes over and over again. This, however, which has pit Wally West against new powers and new beings called The Stillness is redefining the character, and the Speed Force, all over again. This is a run we’ll be talking about for a long time to come.
