February is a shorter month, but that doesn’t mean Marvel can’t pull out all the stops to make this the best leap year ever!! Or at least, there are still a lot of good comics coming out in February, 2024. In particular, the Ultimate Universe line is growing with Ultimate Black Panther plus the second issue of Ultimate Spider-Man. And if you like non-Ultimate things, there are lots of comics in that realm, too. So let’s get into it.
1. Ultimate Black Panther #1
Release Date: February 7, 2024
As mentioned above, this first issue — written by Bryan Hill, with art by Stefano Caselli — doubles the current Ultimate Universe line. Given Ultimate Spider-Man was a clear, huge hit, will this be the same? It’s pitting this new Black Panther against Ultimate Moon Knight, and I’m certainly intrigued. Plus with Caselli on art, this is a must-buy.
2. Night Thrasher #1
Release Date: February 14, 2024
There’s been a little bit of back and forth online about how this book is being advertised as “not your MOM’S ’90s throwback!” or something along those lines. But Night Thrasher has always been a weird, of its time character. And similar throwback series like Daredevil: Black Armor that lean into the absurdity of the era have been a lot of fun. So fingers crossed.
3. Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1
Release Date: February 14, 2024
It was a real bummer when Steve Orlando’s Scarlet Witch series ended. Good news: it’s back with a new series co-starring Wanda’s brother, Pietro. Given Orlando’s affinity for continuity, is it possible he’ll fix the mess that was made when the duo were revealed to not be mutants, nor Magneto’s kids? Maybe!
4. X-Force #49
Release Date: February 21, 2024
Speaking of continuity messes, last month’s issue of X-Force brought back the classic Beast — you know, the “oh my stars and garters!” one — to deal with the problem of the genocidal maniac Beast that’s been running rampant in both this title and Wolverine. And in this issue, classic Beast teams up with Wonder Man? You gotta love it.
5. Ultimate Spider-Man #2
Release Date: February 21, 2024
Did we mention that the first issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Marco Checchetto, was a big, honkin’ hit? Because it was. And in this issue we’re delving further into this brand-new continuity with more Green Goblin, Peter’s first mission as a superhero, and more Uncle Ben: reporter at large. Should be great!
6. Star Wars: Visions – Takashi Okazaki #1
Release Date: February 21, 2024
Just like the Disney+ series that spawned this comic, these one-off, non-continuity stories published by Marvel have been great. At the very least, they’re gorgeous to look at, and offer an entirely different spin on the Star Wars universe.
7. Predator: The Last Hunt #1
Release Date: February 21, 2024
Despite the new number one, this is actually the third arc of Ed Brisson’s Predator story, which follows a woman named Theta who watched her whole family die at a Predator’s hands… And is now combing the galaxy, hunting him down. The first two “series” have been great, so if you can get over the annoying numbering this is well worth checking out.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy Annual 2024 #1
Release Date: February 21, 2024
Despite the mixed reaction from our podcast to this run, I’ll still definitely be checking out this final issue (see “weird numbering” above) from Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Kev Walker. The story hasn’t quite gelled, but Walker’s art is the bee’s knees; and it will be interesting to see where the Guardians will be left at the end here, particularly because right now they’re all trees.
9. The Amazing Spider-Man #44
Release Date: February 28, 2024
The Gang War storyline running through Amazing Spider-Man (and a lot of other titles) has been a ton of fun so far, and it all comes to an end in this issue. Will gangs take over New York? Probably not, but with the underworld a constant presence in Marvel Comics, it will definitely be interesting to see who is left in charge when this all shakes out.
10. What If…? Venom #1
Release Date: February 28, 2024
Normally I’m not a big fan of the goops (aka, symbiotes). And the modern era of What If…? has been spotty in quality. But! Will these be two tastes that taste great together? We’ll certainly find out.
11. Spider-Punk: Arms Race #1
Release Date: February 28, 2024
Arguably a little too late to capitalize on Spider-Punk fever from Across the Spider-Verse, but Cody Ziglar taking on the anarchic Hobie Brown sounds like a good time to me.
