Unlike DC and Marvel, who are taking it easy this month (not really), Image Comics is packing a ton of great titles into the shorter month of February 2024. Yes, there’s an extra leap day, but the only thing Image is doing is leaping past the competition. Okay, I’m done. Let’s break down some of the most hotly anticipated Image comics of the month.
1. The Cull #5
Release Date: February 7, 2024
It’s time for the final issue of this incredible YA meets Lovecraft meets superheroes meets a million other undescribable things book by Kelly Thompson with art by Mattia De Iulis. If you missed this… Well, don’t miss what we called one of the Best Comics of 2023. And probably 2024, too.
2. Love Everlasting #12
Release Date: February 7, 2024
Tom King and Elsa Charretier’s romance comics riff finally starts providing some answers in the form of the Cowboy’s back-story, aka the guy who has been repeatedly murdering our hero Joan for most of the previous issues. How will this all wrap up? Or is it… Everlasting?
3. The One Hand #1 and The Six Fingers #1
Release Date: February 7, 2024 and February 21, 2024
A bit of a cheat here, but these linked series by Ram V and Dan Watters show two sides of a neo-future noir crime story. In The One Hand, a detective is pulled back for one last case when the serial killer he put away twice seems to have emerged again. In The Six Fingers, we see the man who may — or may not — be that serial killer. In our advance review of the issues, we called this a can’t-miss experiment. So, you know, don’t miss it.
4. Saucer Country: The Finale #1
Release Date: February 7, 2024
Paul Cornell and Ryan Kelly finally finish off their conspiracy thriller series with a one-shot appropriately titled “The Finale.” First published by Vertigo, then by IDW, we’re now a decade later and finishing up at Image. Why so many publishers? We’re going to need Publisher Country next to figure this one out.
5. Bloodrik #3
Release Date: February 7, 2024
We love this hungry barbarian comic on Comic Book Club, and recently had creator Andrew Krahnke on our live show to chat about it. Final issue, should be fun!
6. Energon Universe
Release Date: February 7, 2024; February 21, 2024; February 28, 2024
Though there’s no new issue of Void Rivals this month (it will be back in March), Skybound’s Energon Universe is finally firing on all cylinders. On February 7, you’ve got Transformers #5 from Daniel Warren Johnson, which looks to emotionally crush us once again. February 21 brings on Cobra Commander #2, which had an excellent, horror-infused debut. And February 28th’s release Duke #3, as our title hero continues to learn more about Cobra’s new world order. Great stuff, all around.
7. The Deviant #4
Release Date: February 14, 2024
Nobody is doing it like James Tynion IV, and this dark Christmas tale with artist Joshua Hixson is currently one of the most complex, disturbing, and intimate stories on the comic book stands. Fans of Hannibal and similarly psychologically complex horror tales will love it and hate it in turn, as it examines the intersection of homosexuality, serial killing, and self-hatred in ways that will make you crawl out of your own skin.
8. The Infernals #1
Release Date: February 14, 2024
In our advance review of this new book we called it “Succession goes to hell.” And that’s the concept in a nutshell. A dark, fun book about what happens when Lucifer’s son has to pass on his dark empire to three absolutely terrible children.
9. Dutch #1
Release Date: February 14, 2024
Basically, John Wick but set in the Image Comics superhero universe, the zero issue of this “new” series was an absolute blast. Can’t wait for more! That’s it.
10. Ice Cream Man
Release Date: February 28, 2024
There is no comic book that fills me with more dread when I see a new issue coming out than Ice Cream Man. Every issue, you have no idea what’s going to happen other than W. Maxwell Prince and Martín Morazzo will continue to completely emotionally traumatize you. Hooray?
11. Hack/Slash: Back To School #3
Release Date: February 28, 2024
Zoe Thorogood’s take on the slasher universe created by Tim Seeley has been the perfect blend of YA and horror so far, and the third issue, which takes on online brainwashing, should make it a hat trick.
