Meet The Invincible Season 2 Cast: Gillian Jacobs As Atom Eve

We’re mere days away from the Invincible Season 2 premiere. And as we get closer to the return of the hit Prime Video animated series, we’re helping you get prepped with a refresher on the main characters involved in the series. That includes none other than Atom Eve, aka Samantha Eve Wilkins herself.

A key character not just in the show, but also in the comic books by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, Atom Eve is so important she got her own surprise spinoff episode, Invincible Presents Atom Eve Special. Given that special episode is a little hard to find on Prime Video, not to mention it’s been over two years since Invincible Season 1 aired, a little prep work might be in order.

With that in mind, let’s break down what you need to know about Atom Eve from Invincible Season 1 and the Atom Eve special, what to expect in Invincible Season 2, and what you need to know about Gillian Jacobs, the actress who voices Eve on TV.

Who Is Atom Eve, aka Samantha Eve Wilkins, On Invincible?

Well, let’s talk about before Invincible, first. As revealed in the Atom Eve Special Episode, Eve was essentially bred to be the ultimate superhero by the US government. Her mother was a homeless woman named Polly (Grey Griffin) who was repeatedly impregnated by a scientist named Dr. Elias Brandyworth (Stephen Root). Brandyworth used a superhero/supervillain fight as a distraction to get Polly, who was pregnant with Eve at the time, out of the government complex and into a hospital. There, Eve was born, Polly was presumed dead (but actually taken back by the government), and the baby Eve was taken in by the Wilkins family, who had just suffered a miscarriage.

The Wilkins raised Eve as a normal kid, but she was in fact super-smart and able to see the chemical composition of everything from food to objects and beyond. As she grew older, she discovered that she could manipulate matter, including creating pink platforms and jets in order to walk through the air and/or fly. She is also able to create basically anything out of anything else, including food, plants, and more. She initially has a few blocks including not being able to manipulate humans. But after discovering her real origin and parentage, she seemingly broke through those blocks.

When we first meet Atom Eve on Invincible Season 1, she’s a member of the Teen Team, a group of B-listers including her at-the-time boyfriend Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas). Eve fought alongside Invincible (Steven Yeun), introducing him to the team, as well as revealing that they go to high school together in their civilian lives. She’s also friendly with Mark Grayson’s friend group: his girlfriend Amber (Zazie Beetz), and friend William (Andrew Rannells). Oh, and her parents are very uncomfortable with her powers, with her mom treating it like some sort of embarrassing illness, and her dad outright hating what she can do.

Over the course of Season 1, Eve discovered that Rex was cheating on her with Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow), the Teen Team broke up, and she successfully auditioned for the Guardians of the Galaxy, this universe’s premiere superteam. However, Eve became disenfranchised with the whole process and ultimately quit.

What Happened To Atom Eve At The End Of Invincible Season 1?

At the end of the season, Eve has found a new purpose. Rather than getting caught in the non-stop cycle of violence of superhero punch-em-ups, she’s decided to help the entire world in a more proactive way. She moves to Africa and creates a treehouse to live in there, in order to do things like irrigate crops, help revitalize barren areas, and generally be a hero, instead of a superhero.

She does take a break from that all to help out the Guardians when Invincible and Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) have a knock-down, drag-out fight in the Season 1 finale. So while she’s mostly out of the superhero game, protecting the world is still protecting the world.

She also reveals her superhero identity to Amber and William, but they don’t really care.

What’s Next For Atom Eve In Invincible Season 2?

You can find out a little bit about what’s up with Atom Eve in our Invincible Season 2 review (don’t worry, no spoilers there). However in the interest of not being totally cagey: when we pick up in the Season 2 premiere, Eve is still living in her treehouse, and still aiming to help the world. However, what she discovers is that saying you’re going to do something and actually doing it are two different things.

Despite living in Africa, she’s still hanging out with Mark, Amber, and William, and still attending high school. And don’t worry, the Wilkins family will be back as well for much more emotional angst.

Who Plays Atom Eve On Invincible? What To Know About Gillian Jacobs:

Gillian Jacobs is probably best known for playing Britta on Community, a role that she definitely did not Britta up. The 41-year-old Pittsburgh native also played Mickey Dobbs on several seasons of Netflix’s beloved and under-watched Love. On HBO, she appeared as Chris Riley on Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. And while she only played a small role on Hulu’s The Bear, she’s been in a long relationship with the show’s creator Chris Storer, which might explain that series’ multiple Community references and cameos.

She played a recurring role in Netflix’s three-part Fear Street movie series, as well as the theatrical films Don’t Think Twice, Ibiza and I Used To Go Here. And she’s had a prolific career as a voice actress beyond Invincible, including on Rick & Morty, Monsters vs. Aliens, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and many more.

Jacobs has even branched out into directing with “Higher, Further, Faster”, an episode of Marvel’s 616, a documentary series on Disney+, where she interviewed female comic book writers, artists, editors, and more.

She doesn’t post very frequently, but you can join her 29k+ followers on Instagram.
