The wait is over: Madame Web is now streaming on Netflix, and at least on my personal platform the algorithm is pushing the movie hard… There’s a full, above-the-fold banner with a critic’s quote trumpeting the movie as “a return to form for the superhero genre.” And not to toot my own horn, but back in February, I said the movie might stream on Netflix “as early as May 14.” And what’s today? May 14.
That’s pretty much the long and short of the news, that Madame Web is now streaming on Netflix. But given the platform tends to favor absolute shlock that people missed in theaters (complimentary) the internet’s mockery may become a hit on the streamer. While Netflix has always to varying degrees been the digital equivalent of the bottom shelf in a video rental store, lately that seems to have taken on a new life as star-driven action films that flew under the radar/were dumped onto VOD have drawn eyeballs on the service.
Take, for example, the current Top 10… Mother of the Bride, an original rom-com, is number one, and Unfrosted, another original, is at number four. Rounding out the Top 10, though, are two Shrek movies, a foreign action import titled The Courier, the 2014 Robert Downey Jr. drama The Judge, a Scott Adkins thriller titled One More Shot, and Denzel Washington’s Equalizer reboot.
Madame Web is gonna fit perfectly in there as people decide to hate-watch it — though fwiw in our spoiler review of the movie, Comic Book Club didn’t hate it at all. It’s not good, mind you. And it’s not a “return” for the superhero genre. But it is goofy fun. And that’s exactly what works on Netflix.
