‘Creature Commandos’ Teaser Brings On James Gunn’s Task Force M

DC Creature Commandos

Before Superman hits theaters next year, James Gunn is launching a monstrous new series to kick off his brand-new DCU: Creature Commandos, which just dropped its first teaser at San Diego Comic-Con.

In the one-minute-plus look at the Max adult animated series, we see Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) leading Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) to meet his new squad. He’s confused because, after the events of The Suicide Squad, they’re not allowed to use humans to do their dirty deeds anymore.

Don’t worry, Waller his it figured out: they’ll use monsters, instead. And in the footage, we meet a few of them:

  • Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma)
  • Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao)
  • Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk)
  • Frankenstein (David Harbour)
  • G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn)
  • Weasel (also Sean Gunn)

In addition, the show will feature Steve Agee as John Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, and Anya Charlota as Circe. The show is created, written, and showrun by James Gunn, and the goal is that these animated characters can — and will — cross over into live action in the DCU if required. And in fact, we already know that Grillo will be making his way to Peacemaker Season 2, probably to settle that whole “Peacemaker killed his son” thing.

In addition, David Dastmalchian, who played Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, will be writing a six-issue series titled DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos which will launch in October. That will be based on the classic lineup of characters from DC’s Weird War Tales #93, and will feature art by Jesús Hervás. It will hit stores on October 2.
