Invincible Season 2 Finale Slipped In A Fortnite Reference

Invincible Fortnite Reference

In the season 2 finale of Invincible on Prime Video, Mark Grayson, aka Invincible (Steven Yeun) was sent hurtling through the multiverse by villain Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown). In the process, we got a sort of Spider-Man cameo from voice actor Josh Keaton. We got a not-exactly Batman cameo. And there was even a universe with talking dinosaurs. Oh, and also Invincible was sent to the Fortnite universe.

…Or at least, Invincible seems to have been sent to a universe where there are weapons from Fortnite. Some eagle-eyed viewers over on Reddit picked up that in one blink-and-you-miss-it moment, when Mark jumps out of a portal he’s wielding one of Fortnite’s exotic sniper rifles. Said user Midice, who caught the gun cameo, “The exotic sniper rifle makes a special appearance in the latest episode! Makes getting the skin in fortnite all the better!”

As far as my untrained eyes can tell, Invincible is about to bash Angstrom’s brains in with the Dragon’s Breath Sniper, an exotic sniper rifle first introduced in Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 5. As noted on the Fortnite wiki, it’s “an exotic version of the Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle.” Cool? Yes, let’s say, cool.

The funny thing about this is it’s a little more than Invincible slipping in a Fortnite reference. It’s actually a canonical explanation for how the character ended up in the Fortnite universe in the game. And in fact, Invincible, Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), and Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) are all reportedly available as skins in Fortnite right now.

While sending Mark through a portal doesn’t quite explain why Eve and Nolan are there too, there’s a second layer to this Fortnite reference… Invincible creator Robert Kirkman pulled a similar trick when he crossed over Invincible and Spider-Man in the comics, using the Angstrom Levy fight as an excuse to send Mark to the Marvel Universe. While that’s just not possible given, you know, rights and stuff, this is a way of explaining why and how Invincible went to Fortnite with a neat bit of corporate coordination.

Now, to get back to that talking dinosaur universe…
