Invincible Reveals Spider-Man, Batman Cameos… Sort Of

Agent Spider Invincible Josh Keaton Spider-Man cameo

Since the announcement of the Invincible Season 2 voice cast last year, fans have been buzzing about one name in particular… Josh Keaton, who voiced Spider-Man in The CW animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man. Now that the Invincible Season 2 finale is here, we know who Keaton voices and it’s… Agent Spider?

Spoilers, obviously, past this point. In Invincible Season Season 2, Episode 8 “I Thought You Were Stronger,” Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) is thrust through the multiverse by villain Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown). Along the way he ends up in a number of alternate dimensions reminiscent of other media properties. At one point he’s arguing on a roof with an unseen character who is clearly supposed to be Batman. He ends up in a Masters of the Universe dimension. He even heads to a zombie dimension, albeit the zombies talk with the voice of Zachary Quinto, so it’s not Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman‘s fellow creation The Walking Dead.

But the marquee appearance happens pretty quickly in the episode when we cut to an alleyway where a spider-themed hero is fighting a (non-speaking role) octopus-themed villain. While it’s clearly not Spider-Man, the character is voiced by Keaton and is named Agent Spider. You can tell by the big, Captain America-style A on his chest! Invincible helps Agent Spider put down his cephalopod adversary, and the two briefly bond before Mark jumps back through the multiverse.

Agent Spider and Invincible on the Season 2 finale

…And other than the switch of character names and designs, this is pretty much exactly what happened in 2005’s Marvel Team-Up Vol. 3 #14. Written by Kirkman with art by Cory Walker, at the time Kirkman was writing both Invincible and Marvel Team-Up. In Invincible #33, which came out a few months later in June of 2006, Angstrom Levy was indeed throwing Mark through the multiverse. So Kirkman was able to do a Marvel Comics/Image Comics crossover (presumably because Image Comics properties are creator-owned, versus Marvel) and give a little tease of what’s to come.

There’s actually a lot more that happens in the Marvel Team-Up issue as Invincible hangs out for a while and meets The Avengers. But as is, the initial scene is pretty much beat for beat how you saw it on the show.

Now, the only question is whether J.K. Simmons, who plays Omni-Man in Invincible and J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies, will get to shout “Get me pictures of Agent Spider!”
