Booster Gold, Lanterns, Waller, In Development At DC Studios

Booster Gold, Waller, Green Lantern Max series

James Gunn’s DCU is in an interesting place. A year plus after announcing a robust plan that stretched over five-ish years, and promised five more after that, we know relatively little about what’s coming out from the studio — which, mind you, is by design… Gunn has been very clear they won’t move forward with projects until they feel confident in the scripts. So here are three more projects that may be inching towards reality: Max (formerly HBO Max) series Waller, Lanterns, and Booster Gold.

The news comes from the latest issue of Production Weekly, which lists all three projects as in “development.” Full transparency: while Production Weekly is reliable, these sorts of projects pop in and out from time to time; so it’s possible this could be the same sort of stage these projects were in anyway, or it could indicate some sort of movement.

We’d prefer to think the latter, as Gunn has also stated that there are some projects — unnamed — that are moving closer to actually getting casts, going into production, etc. We know that Superman Legacy begins production in March. The animated series Creature Commandos is moving apace and may debut later this year. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has a lead and a script, though no director as of yet. And Gunn himself is done writing Peacemaker Season 2, presumably to hop right onto after Superman is finished filming.

So it stands to reason that some other projects are bubbling in the background. Waller is a no-brainer, a Peacemaker spinoff featuring Viola Davis as Suicide Squad head Amanda Waller. Lanterns we know is a True Detective style mystery series featuring Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a mystery on Earth, and Gunn has called it a key part of the story they’re telling in the DCU. And Booster Gold is also there.

While it’s unlikely all three of these will get fast-tracked at once unless the scripts are there, with Superman Legacy serving as the official kick-off of the DCU in July of 2025, it makes a lot of sense that they might want to follow with Lanterns soon after to get the story going. And with Peacemaker in the offing, it’s possible they could follow that up with Waller as well. Then Booster Gold? I don’t know.

Anyway, expect James Gunn to shut this down on his Threads account shortly. Until then, make mine DC! That’s what they say, right? Right.
