David Pepose Bringing Space Ghost From Coast To Comics For Dynamite

Space Ghost #1 from Dynamite

Nowadays, the character Space Ghost is probably better known for the Adult Swim talk show that repurposed the old cartoons, bringing in celebrity guests for a faux variety series that leaned into absurdity and uncomfortable moments of dead air. Well, forget all that! Because the original Space Ghost is back, and he’s coming to Dynamite Comics thanks to writer David Pepose, and artist Jonathan Lau.

“I’m so excited to be diving into the world of Space Ghost!,” said writer David Pepose via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “When Dynamite first approached me about tackling this series, I was immediately struck by the sheer amount of raw material we had to play with — the cartoons were immensely stylish and a heck of a lot of fun, but they never had the time to develop those characters beyond their powers and the roles they played in each episode. So we’re taking those classic vibes and using them as a starting point to dig even deeper into the characters than the original cartoons were ever able to.”

So what is this serious take on Space Ghost all about? The short version is he’s a mysterious vigilante in space, who may or may not be a phantom. In the first issue, per Dynamite, there’s, “a surprise attack on Space Colony Omicron, home of brilliant scientist Dr. Jerrod Keplar, his young children Jan and Jace, as well as their monkey Blip. Only the wild card of Space Ghost will be able to save them from the ruthless pirates!”

Space Ghost is the second book to come out of Dynamite’s team-up with Warner Bros. Discovery for a new line of comics. The first? ThunderCats, which sold over 180,000 copies out of the gate, making it probably the biggest single-issue comic of the young year so far. Other titles forthcoming include PowerPuff Girls, Flinstones, Wizard of Oz, and many more.

The first issue, which hits in May, includes covers from Francesco Mattina, Jae Lee, Bjorn Barends, and Michael Cho. You can check out all the covers and interior pages below. Now, when does Brak get his own comic?

  1. Ah it’s a third Space Ghost reboot comic. I was hoping for something post Coast to Coast but I’ll give it a shot anyway.

      1. I have to admit I got a big laugh out of Tansits presence. I showed the preview to two of my friends and they both replied with the “please stop praying for my grandpa he’s too powerful” meme
