Daniel Clowes Monica Has Won Best Book At Angoulême:

Daniel Clowes new book Monica has won the Fauve D’Or Best Book prize at this year’s Angoulême Festival, one of the most prestigious comic conventions in the world.

The Beat reports that not only did Clowes snag the prize, but fellow Americans James Tynion IV, Alvaro Martinez Bueno, and Jordie Bellaire grabbed the Series Prize for DC’s The Nice House on the Lake volume 2. All this goes to show that the United States rules, and France drools.

However, Clowes did not win the top prize, despite what you might think from the phrase “Best Book.” The Grand Prix was won by British cartoonist Posy Simmonds. Though Simmonds is known for her comics syndicated in UK newspapers, she’s not pumping up high society versions of The Lockhorns or anything. In fact, she’s known for her updates of Madame Bovary and Far From The Madding Crowd. So I guess sort of like a high society version of The Lockhorns, actually.

Clowes, unfortunately, couldn’t be there in person to accept the award, as at the time he had COVID. As for Nice House on the Lake, The Beat notes this may be the first time DC has won an award at Angoulême since V for Vendetta in 1990.

Oni Press Reveals New Volume Of Scott Pilgrim Works In 20th Anniversary Box Set:

Oni Press has finally opened the lid on what will be inside their upcoming 20th-anniversary box sets for Scott Pilgrim. And one of the things you can expect? A “new” volume.

I don’t know if you could hear the quotes around new, but I don’t want to imply we’re getting a continuation of the story in comic book form. Instead, in addition to all six hardcover volumes of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic series, all featuring new covers by O’Malley, there will be a seventh hardcover collecting all of the series’ behind-the-scenes process art and “making of” material with commentary by Bryan Lee O’Malley. That volume is titled Scott Pilgrim: Collected Extras, and that’s pretty cool, man.

Previously announced as part of the sets, in both color and black and white versions, will be:

  • Three exclusive sticker sheets dedicated to Scott Pilgrim’s beloved cast and the series’ 20th anniversary
  • Multiple exclusive posters, including a Sex Bob-omb concert print and a deluxe holofoil art print, featuring Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, and Gideon Graves
  • Wraparound SP20 box set design and clamshell collector’s case designed by Patrick Crotty

“We’ve all been working hard on these box sets, which I think are such a complicated project and interesting challenge,” said Bryan Lee O’Malley via a press release provided to Comic Book Club News. “It’s been fun working with the legend Patrick Crotty and my buddy Nathan Fairbairn, and the folks at Oni Press are doing a great job. I hope everyone likes the end results!”

Previously announced for the beginning of July, the box sets will now be available sometime in August. meanwhile, Oni has also announced that after the sets hit, they’ll also be releasing “SCOTT PILGRIM 20th ANNIVERSARY PRINT PORTFOLIO – featuring a collection of classic and new images, personally selected by O’Malley – plus a new SCOTT PILGRIM 20th ANNIVERSARY COLORING BOOK.” And more merch to come.

Do me a favor and tell more people to listen to this podcast, I need the ad money to spend on Scott Pilgrim merchandise, because I’m a responsible adult.

Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow Selling For Big Money For Collectors:

Monday evening, January 29, 2024, House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock was officially cast as Supergirl in the upcoming movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the comic book by Bilquis Evely and Tom King. And of course, collectors are already getting in on the action — despite the movie not even having a director yet.

As initially reported on January 30 by Bleeding Cool, a regular copy of the first issue was selling last week for $7.50, and then jumped all the way to $35 on eBay. Meanwhile, a slabbed copy graded at 9.8, meaning Near Mint or Mint, was going for $150. As of this taping, the unslabbed copies have settled down a bit, ranging from $20 to $40.

However, the 9.8 slabbed copies seem to only be growing over time, with the base price now at $160, and ranging all the way up to $200 for a copy. Given Alcock probably won’t debut in the role until next year’s Superman Legacy and the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie won’t start shooting until later this year, at the earliest… You might want to invest in a copy now before the price goes even higher.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. Say does anyone know how much the Grand Prix at Angoulême pays? If I win that, can I use the money to buy a Scott Pilgrim box set and a Near Mint copy of Supergirl #1? Anyone?
