Marvel‘s What If…? on Disney+ goes back in time for an episode that was supposed to be in Season 1 for today’s episode, “What If… Iron Man Crashed Into The Grandmaster?” Wondering who’s who in the What If…? Season 2 Episode 4 voice cast? We’ve got you covered.
As usual with What If…?, the episode is finding an event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). and giving a little tweak on it. Here, it’s a pretty big tweak, though. After bringing the nuclear warhead through the portal in Avengers, Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is trapped in space and sent directly to The Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) planet, Sakaar. There he lives through a Nascar version of Thor: Ragnarok, forced by the Grandmaster to compete for his life.
There’s a second tweak though, which isn’t immediately clear. As Iron Man thwarted Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) plans, he also thwarted Thanos’s (Josh Brolin) plans. So Thanos sends Gamora (Zoë Saldaña) after him, leading to the two teaming up to first take down The Grandmaster, then Thanos.
If this Iron Man and Gamora look/sound familiar, that’s because this episode was originally planned as the Season 1 finale of What If…? but got pushed back because of production schedules. Hence also why there’s a little recap at the beginning including the final few episodes of What If…? Season 1.
That’s all well and good, but do these stars of the silver screen deign to perform voice work on a Disney+ cartoon? For the most part… No. But there are a few, so let’s take a look at the voice cast, right here, right now.
What If…? Season 2 Episode 4 Cast: Who’s Who In The Cast?
The short way of breaking this down is the Thor: Ragnarok cast seems super game to come back to do voices. Every else? Not so much.
Jeffrey Wright is back this episode as The Watcher, as he is every episode.
From the Thor: Ragnarok cast, that is indeed Jeff Goldblum’s iconic voice as The Grandmaster, because who else would it be? Tessa Thompson reprises her role as Valkyrie from Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder, Avengers: Endgame, and The Marvels. Taika Waititi is also back as Korg, though you knew that because he already appeared in What If…? Season 2, Episode 1. And perhaps the most pleasant surprise return? Rachel House as Topaz, Grandmaster’s ultra-dry second-in-command, she of the melting stick.
Though it’s brief, Josh Brolin also returns as Thanos, just in time for Gamora to murder him with the aforementioned melting stick. Bet the Avengers wish they had that doohickey on Titan back in Infinity War, huh?
Other than that, though, you’ve got some commensurate voice actors. Mick Wingert plays Tony Stark/Iron Man, just as he’s done many times before. And Cynthia McWilliams does the voice of Gamora, just as she did in Season 1.
