One thing that’s been missing from What If…? Season 2 so far? End credits scenes. But what if (pun intended) I told you there was, indeed, a What If…? Season 2 Episode 4 end credits scene? Well, there is! Right after the main credits, there’s an extra scene involving Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster that will haunt your dreams.
You can watch it for yourself on Disney+ right now. But in the interest of not having a two-paragraph long article, let’s break down what happens in the episode, as well as explain the post-credits sequence.
What If…? Season 2, Episode 4 Recap:
In today’s episode, titled “What If… Iron Man Crashed Into The Grandmaster?” the twist is that Iron Man never made it home after bringing the nuclear warhead through the portal in Avengers. Instead, he crashed into the Grandmaster’s planet of Sakaar, and ended up in a Formula One version of Thor: Ragnarok.
Grandmaster, voiced by Jeff Goldblum, keeps calling it chariot races, and Iron Man (voiced by Mick Wingert) is horrified by the amount of people dying in them. So he ends up teaming up with Korg (voiced by Taika Waititi) and Valkyrie (voiced by Tessa Thompson) to take Grandmaster down.
There’s an additional twist, though, which is a sort of What If…? dominoes type deal. Since Tony Stark is in space now, and essentially defeated Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin) by defeating Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston, not in the episode) army, Thanos sends Gamora (Cynthia McWilliams) after Tony. Similar to Gamora’s arc in Guardians of the Galaxy, Tony’s heroism eventually wins her over and she helps him take down the Grandmaster in a winner-takes-all race.
Of course, Grandmaster cheats and says he won; at which point, his second-in-command Topaz (voiced by Rachel House) pulls out her melting stick. She never gets to use it, though, and instead, it rolls and dinks Grandmaster on the toe. He kind of likes how it feels, and does an “I’m melting, I’m melting” thing which makes one wonder how Wizard of Oz made it to Sakaar. So RIP Grandmaster, right?
What If…? Season 2, Episode 4 End Credits Scene Explained:
Not so fast! After the main credits of the episode, we cut back to the racetrack where Topaz is stoically looking down at a puddly Grandmaster. “Wow, Topaz, so glad you’re here,” says Grandmaster. “Hey, can you find a bucket? I need a bucket, and a mop at this point.”
We cut to a full-screen view of melted Grandmaster, looking like something out of a psychedelic ’70s animated movie. He continues, “Sponge me. Sponge me up. I need to be absorbed by something. Oooh.”
…And that’s pretty much it, just a goofy scene with Goldblum giving an uncomfortably sexual tinge to the word “sponge.” And I don’t know a lot about the internet, but if that last bit isn’t turned into a TikTok sound ASAP, I will drink an entire bucket of Grandmaster.
What If…? Season 2 Premiere Dates And Episode Guide:
Sounds fun, right? But when can you watch it? The weird way Marvel and Disney+ are rolling out these episodes is one per day, over the holidays. So the answer is: pretty much non-stop.
