We’re only two episodes into Marvel‘s What If…? Disney+ Season 2 event, where new episodes roll out on the daily for nine days. But already, the What If…? Season 2 Episode 2 cast is a doozy, with a slew of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) guest stars. Wondering who voices Bill Foster, Bucky Barnes, and the rest of Avengers ’88? Look no further.
In Season 2, Episode 2, titled “What If… Peter Quill Attacked Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?” our divergence point is the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy. In the movie, Yondu (Michael Rooker) kept Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) from his father, Ego (Michael Douglas). In this episode, Peter gets sent right to him, in 1988. And that means Ego is able to corrupt Peter and use him to turn all planets into, well, Ego.
After tearing through the nine realms, Peter (who is still kid here) hits Earth, which means it’s time to assemble a 1980s version of The Avengers. That includes Ant-Man (Michael Douglas), Goliath (Laurence Fishburne), The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), and even a younger version of T’Chaka (John Kani). But do these same actors voice their cartoon counterparts? Let’s discuss.
What If…? Season 2 Episode 2 Cast: Who’s Who In The Cast?
Once again we’ve got Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, but that’s a given. Beyond that, pretty much most of the cast is played by who played them on screen.
Michael Douglas is back as Dr. Hank Pym/Ant-Man, after portraying the character in all three Ant-Man movies. Hayley Atwell, a linchpin of the What If…? series is back as Peggy Carter, albeit not in the Captain Carter costume. This is picking up off her status quo from the opening bit of the first Ant-Man movie, where she works with John Slattery’s version of Howard Stark at S.H.I.E.L.D. Slattery is back too, by the way.
Kurt Russell does indeed do the voice of Ego the Living Planet, while Chris Hemsworth shows up late in the game as Thor. Laurence Fishburne returns to voice Dr. Bill Foster, aka Goliath, after appearing in Ant-Man and the Wasp. And Sebastian Stan once again portrays Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier.
There are also a pair of voice actors you might not be aware are reprising their live-action roles, but they are! Atandwa Kani, who played a younger version of his father, John Kani’s T’Chaka, in Black Panther does indeed voice Young T’Chaka here, as well. Madeleine McGraw once again plays young Hope Van Dyne after playing the role on screen in Ant-Man and the Wasp. And surprisingly, Gene Farber once again voices Karpov, The Winter Soldier’s Russian handler, after playing the role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and in flashback in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Wyatt Oleff, who played Young Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy does not return for this. He’s replaced by Mace Montgomery Miskel. And Annette Benning is not back in the role of Wendy Lawson, aka Mar-Vell after Captain Marvel. That voice is instead portrayed by Keri Tombazian.
