Operation Sunshine #1 review header

From Henry Zebrowski and Marcus Parks, the hosts of Last Podcast On The Left, and artist David Rubín, comes a new horror comedy comic about a vampire heist. But did Dark Horse‘s new book steal… Our hearts??

We reviewed the book on the Stack podcast. But in the interest of highlighting more about the title, here’s a summary of the conversation with our thoughts. And if you prefer the longer audio version, that’s below as well!

Operation Sunshine #1 Review:

In this new series, we meet two “bugs” – low-level vampires who are just trying to get enough blood to survive. One is hundreds of years old but looks like a teen; the other is new, and essentially created Uber, but for blood. Together, they’re going to have to pull off the heist of the century.

Host Pete LePage kicked things off with a shout-out to the Last Podcast on the Left crew, and Henry Zebrowski in particular. “This is very much in Henry’s wheelhouse,” LePage said. “He loves creepy stories and all sorts of cryptic stuff like this.”

LePage added that he loved the “madness of the world.” And despite being yet another vampire story, the book did, “such a great job of… setting up something that is original.”

Alex Zalben noted that the book has a “sort of grody, ’70s vibe to it” from the art perspective. He compared it to somewhere between R. Crumb and MAD Magazine, while still feeling unique and fresh. On the story front, Zalben felt Operation Sunshine was “packed with jokes in every single frame” while not forgetting to add “some very real stakes.” No pun intended.

Finishing up, Zalben felt the book had a “really good mythology and world-building,” with LePage saying it was, “such a solid first issue… Showing us this slice of life, and [then] getting you excited for more.”
