After nearly four years, Marvel is officially ending the X-Men‘s Krakoa era. The news was confirmed at yesterday’s (October 14) Marvel: Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con, where more details on how things will end were revealed. Specifically, with three titles: Fall of the House of X, Rise of the Powers of X, and Resurrection of Magneto.
To take a big step back, in 2019, writer Jonathan Hickman and company took a bold, new take on the storied X-Men franchise. Thanks to two titles, House of X, and Powers of X, Marvel’s mutants were all moved to the island nation of Krakoa. Rather than in-fighting, they banded together with their worst enemies to try a new way of survival. The goal? Fight a future where the deadly, mechanical Phalanx was not able to take over the entire universe.
Earlier this year that all came crashing down in Hellfire Gala 2023. The issue found Orchis, an evil organization bent on destroying mutants, essentially winning. Mutants were killed, some were exiled, and others took to the underground to fight back. Meanwhile, mutants became the enemies of humanity thanks to a false flag operation. This story has rolled out under the ongoing Fall of X label, but that all changes next year.
What’s Next After Fall Of X?
So what’s next? Well, the end of the Krakoa era, basically. Fall of the House of X will be a five-issue mini-series detailing the X-Men’s final fight against Orchis, while Cyclops is on trial facing the death penalty. Rise of the Powers of X will also be five issues long, and will take place 10 years later after they’ve failed — and Orchis is about to bring the Phalanx to Earth. Meanwhile, Magneto — who is currently dead — will get resurrected in the four-issue-long Resurrection of Magneto and may hold the key to saving everyone.
…and when it’s done, Editor Jordan D. White will be exiting the X-Men line, while Editor Tom Brevoort will be taking over.
Check out more about each individual miniseries courtesy of Marvel, and lament that we never got to see Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Wolverine have that threeway on the moon.
