Quick: legally speaking, what’s the safest way of getting off a murder charge? If you answered “have your mom defend you in court,” then congratulations, you’re Archie Andrews (KJ Apa). Or at least, that’s what it looks like, in our first glimpse at the Riverdale Season 3 premiere, “Chapter Thirty-Six: Labor Day.”
The CW has released a scant nine photos from the episode, but after the long wait this summer, it’s nice to see something from the teen drama’s third season. In case you space out on Season 2, it ended with Archie being accused of the murder of Cassidy Bullock. Only problem, our fave redhead didn’t murder Cassidy. That murder was, in fact, ordered by Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), who then set up Archie to split up the main foursome on the show.
Only, at least based on these pics, the foursome is still incredible fearsome. We get a glimpse of Archie together with his endgame (her words, not ours) Veronica (Camila Mendes). We see Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) still going strong, after he popped some sort of question to her in the Season 2 finale. And then after an idyllic day at a watering hole, complete with Archie’s 30-45 or so abs, it’s off to court.
A few details of note there, including Molly Andrews (Molly Ringwald) defending Archiekins, while former Mayor, now defense lawyer Sierra McCoy (Robin Givens) is her second. There’s also the District Attorney Ms. Wright, played by Penelope Ann Miller. She’s sure to give the law firm of Andrews & McCoy a run for their money… But my money is Archie ultimately getting off, because you can’t turn this show into Teen Oz, right? Unless you can? Because there are basically no rules in Riverdale?
Anyway, check out the pics below, and speculate wildly until the show returns on October 10:
