April is an interesting month for DC Comics. We’ve got the kick-off of the House of Brainiac event, something Joshua Williamson has been building up to for years in various titles. You’ve got a slew of good-looking annuals. And there are regular issues of Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and all the rest of your faves.
But! At the same time, it does feel like the publisher is holding their breath a bit until they can release the Absolute Power Free Comic Book Day issue on May 4, when the ball they’ve been rolling up the ol’ story hill starts crashing downwards.
There’s still plenty to enjoy from DC Comics in April 2024, though, so read on for our 11 top picks of titles.
1. Shazam! #10
Release Date: April 2, 2024
Mark Waid is great and all, but Josie Campbell taking over as the new writer of Shazam! with Emanuela Lupacchino on art? Yes, please! Happily for fans of the first nine issues, this will still continue the plotlines including a top hat-wearing dinosaur, and Billy Batson’s increasingly fractured psyche that finds a return of a separation between him and The Captain. But this new team is cause for excitement. Or at least, yelling “Shazam!”
2. Action Comics #1064
Release Date: April 9, 2024
The kick-off of the “House of Brainiac” storyline finally pays off on years of storytelling writer Joshua Williamson has been seeding throughout his many titles for DC Comics. This continues throughout the month in both Action Comics and Superman, as well as several spinoffs and a one-shot special at the end of the month.
3. Outsiders #6
Release Date: April 9, 2024
Outsiders has been a slow burn, but issue #6 seems to be the wildest one so far as the team travels inside the margins of a comic book.
4. Suicide Squad: Dream Team #2
Release Date: April 9, 2024
This new title by Nicole Maines came out strong out of the gate, centering her character Dreamer as the new leader of the Suicide Squad. It’s also positioned as an essential book if you’re interested in DC’s upcoming Absolute Power crossover, so check out this dreamy series while you can.
5. Nightwing #113
Release Date: April 16, 2024
Legacy numbered #300, this book celebrates Nightwing in all his glory. First, check out that awesome cover. Next, just know that with Tom Taylor, Marv Wolfman, and Michael Conrad writing; and Bruno Redondo, Howard Porter, and Daniele di Nicuolo on art, this is definitely gonna make you cry and scream.
6. Wonder Woman #8
Release Date: April 16, 2024
After seven issues of build-up — eight if you include the tease in Wonder Woman #800 — Diana and The Sovereign, the secret king of America, come face to face. Will we get a bit of the ol’ “I’m not trapped in here with you, you’re trapped in here with me”? Stay tuned.
7. Nightwing 2024 Annual #1
Release Date: April 30, 2024
Just like how Nightwing has two buttcheeks, there are two issues of his title to enjoy this month. The annual comes from writer/artist Travis Moore, and tells the secret origin of Dick’s ex-girlfriend Bea Bennett, the pirate queen.
8. The Flash 2024 Annual #1
Release Date: April 30, 2024
Simon Spurrier has been weaving a horrifying tale of Wally West on a monthly basis, so what will he do with the extra page space? Yikes! Scary!
9. Harley Quinn 2024 Annual #1
Release Date: April 30, 2024
My most-anticipated DC title of the month? This annual, written and drawn by Erica Henderson, which takes Harley and Zatanna and throws them in the middle of a cruise ship mystery. There is literally no part of that which doesn’t sound like the bee’s knees.
10. Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #6
Release Date: April 30, 2024
This title, which has basically redefined Alan Scott from top to bottom, comes to an end in this issue. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster filled with thrilling action and wild twists. How will it end? I can’t wait to find out!
11. Superman: House Of Brainiac Special #1
Release Date: April 30, 2024
As mentioned above, this wraps up the first month of House of Brainiac, and gives us a peek into some of the rooms in Brainiac’s house. Specifically, answering a number of questions about the event — and teeing up the upcoming Absolute Power event, which kicks off in the May 4 Free Comic Book Day issue.
