Looking for the best graphic novels for kids for April 2024? Great news, you’ve come to the right place. There are a ton of graphic novels hitting stores this month perfect for children and families, and we sifted through the pile to choose 11 of the best.
That includes a new book in the Last Kids on Earth spinoff series, a Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur book based on the Disney Channel show, and a ton more. Nine more, in fact. So let’s get into it! Here are our picks for the best kids graphic novels this month.
1. The Last Comics On Earth: Too Many Villains

Release Date: April 30, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
The sequel to the sidequel to The Last Kids on Earth, Max Brallier and Joshua Pruet’s riff on superhero stories is a goofy delight. Here’s the gist: The Last Kids have to deliver a sequel to their hit previous graphic novel, and end up riffing on a mash-up of various apocalypses meet superhero riffs. It’s packed to the brim with jokes that will work for both kids and adults (Public Doman Dracula is a personal favorite), and definitely appeal to anyone who is a fan of superheroes, the hit Last Kids series of books, or the Netflix adaptation.
2. Dr. Seuss Graphic Novel: Cat Out Of Water

Release Date: April 30, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 5-8 years old
I’ll fully admit to being dubious about Random House launching a line of Dr. Seuss graphic novels. But you can’t go wrong with Art Baltazar, and this 80-page book might be the perfect gateway for the younger audiences into the wide world of graphic novels.
3. Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur: Wreck And Roll

Release Date: April 2, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
An original graphic novel set in the world of the Disney Channel animated series, itself based on the Marvel Comics, more Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is always a good thing. And Stephanie Williams always delivers a fun story, so this is well worth checking out — whether you watch the show, or not.
4. Sky & Ty 1: Howdy, Partner!

Release Date: April 2, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 6-9 years old
Steve Breen’s adorable cowboy meets dinosaur adventure might remind you of another book we noted above. However, it’s much more reminiscent of Calvin & Hobbes in the old west. It’s extremely cute, and the first in a series, so get them cowboys and cowgirls hooked early.
5. Monkey King and the World of Myths: The Monster and the Maze

Release Date: April 2, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
As a fan of mythology, I found this mash-up story absolutely delightful — taking the Monkey King stories and mixing them with classic Greek myths for a tale of adventure and friendship. Plus, Maple Lam’s Cerberus (seen on the cover) demands a plushie.
6. Shiny Misfits

Release Date: April 16, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
Comedian and disability advocate Maysoon Zayid launches her first graphic novel, with artist Shadia Amin. Focusing on a girl named Bay Ann who wants to be known for her star power and not the disability that makes her go viral, this should appeal to the theater kid in all of us.
7. Melowy Vol. 6: The Dream Realm

Release Date: April 30, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 7-12 years old
The sixth volume in Papercutz series about magical ponies who are not my little pony, they belong to everyone, the unicorns have to break out a nightmare in order to save the day. This is like Gobots vs Transformers all over again.
8. Dotson: My Journey Growing Up Transgender

Release Date: April 4, 2023
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
This intriguing autobiographical graphic novel by Grayson Lee White details his experiences growing up trans. From trying to figure things out like which bathroom to use, to what name to be called, it’s all in this book. Plus, there are helpful resources for trans kids (and parents) in the back.
9. Katie, Batter Up! The Graphic Novel

Release Date: April 9, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
The fifth volume in the graphic novel adaptation of Coco Simon’s hit The Cupcake Diaries series, Katie needs to deal with whether she prefers to “batter up” or to mix batter up. You get it.
10. Timid

Release Date: April 9, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
Jonathan Todd’s semi-autobiographical graphic novel from Graphix focuses on a kid named Cecil Hall who has just moved from Florida to outside Boston and just wants to be known for his artistic prowess — instead of what he looks like. He runs into trouble thanks to his drawings and has to wrestle with fitting in with the kids at school. Relatable!
11. Meet Me On Mercer Street

Release Date: April 2, 2024
Suggested Reading Age: 8-12 years old
Booki Vivat, best known for the Frazzled series, stretches out with a new book pitched as “Harriet the Spy meets Front Desk,” which: sign me up?
