This is Comic Book Club News for February 22, 2024.

Mystique And Destiny Get Married In Upcoming X-Men: Wedding Special:

Marvel is about to make Marvel history with their first woman-to-woman wedding. The event will take place as part of the publisher’s Pride Month celebration, kicking things off a little earlier with the May 29 debuting X-Men: The Wedding Special.

Written by Kieron Gillen with one of my favorite artists, TBA, on board, the main story in the issue will show the previously unseen wedding of Destiny and Mystique, as well as a vow renewal ceremony in front of all their frenemies. This comes hot on the heels of X-Men: Blue, which revealed the previously scuttled storyline of the mutant duo secretly being Nightcrawler’s biological parents. And it also comes at the tail end of the current continuity of the X-Men, which will be wrapping up its current era in June, before some sort of a reboot in July.

Said Gillen via press release: “They’ve been through hell, mainly at my pen. Finally, giving these two a happy day? How can I say no.”

The issue will also feature stories by Tini Howard, Tate Brombal, and Wyatt Kennedy, and a cover by Jan Bazaldua. Additional stories will focus on similar LGBTQ+ X-Men characters like Betsy Braddock and Rachel Summers, and… Loki? Really? They couldn’t find one more gay X-Men character? That seems unlikely.

Anyway, special sounds great, see you in May for the wedding of the year.

Briar Is Back At BOOM! Studios With New Issues:

Here’s a comic you don’t want to sleep on: Briar from BOOM! Studios is back this May with issue #5 of the ongoing riff on Sleeping Beauty. That’s why I said not to sleep on it!

Written by Christopher Cantwell, the first four issues were a fave of Comic Book Club. And for this new arc, he’ll be joined by artist Alex Lins.

Said Cantwell via press release: “Briar focuses on people who have fallen out of the grander story, or feel they have no place in it at all. This book is what happens when the entire fairy tale comes apart, and only a few, fringe characters are left to pick up the pieces, having to forge their own radical destinies instead of being handed happy endings.”

The new issue will hit shops on May 15, 2024. The first collected volume of the series is now available at stores everywhere.

Adventure Time Comics Back, At Oni Press:

BOOM! may have Briar, but they won’t have Adventure Time anymore. The license has moved from BOOM!’s KaBOOM imprint, over to Oni Press starting later this year. But don’t worry, the original runs will be collected in new compendiums from Oni Press — all leading to a new series in 2025.

Said Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn: “For nearly a decade, the Adventure Time line of comics was a magnet for some of the most intensely talented voices working in the comics medium, drawing in an entirely new generation of readers in the process. Building upon the genius of Pendleton Ward’s inventive, influential, and iconic animated series, this enormous wealth of comics creativity has been out of print for far too long – and it’s an immense privilege to bring it to Oni Press, where we aim to bring forth new collections that will meet the high expectations of both original fans and new readers alike…and start to craft all-new adventures for Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline, and more.”

The first compendium, Adventure Time Compendium Vol. 1, will feature 35 issues by Ryan North, and be released in October. This will be followed in November by Adventure Time: The Fionna and Cake Compendium, collecting the spinoff series, and others.
