What do kids love? If you said “biting political satire,” you’d be absolutely right. Or at least, you’d be on the same wavelength as DC Comics, which is releasing Mark Russell‘s 2016 series Prez: Setting a Dangerous President as a YA graphic novel, just in time for this year’s Presidential election.
Set in 2046, Prez focuses on Beth Ross, a 19-year-old who gets her hair caught in a deep-fryer, and after becoming the viral sensation known as “Corndog Girl” becomes elected President. You can probably extrapolate how well that goes, but Russell has continued to hone his satirical chops for years now, including the Eisner-nominated The Flintstones to Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles (winner of the 2019 GLAAD Award for Outstanding Comic), Wonder Twins, One-Star Squadron, Superman: Space Age (2022 Eisner nominee, Best Limited Series), and the upcoming Batman: Dark Age.
Prez, an early series from the author, was selected as one of YALSA’s (Young Adult Library Services Association) Top Ten Graphic Novels for Teens. And now DC is collecting the six-issue series with art by Ben Caldwell (with Dominike “Domo” Stanton) as a 184-page softcover, in the same format as DC’s other YA books. Not only that, but the volume will contain a new, original Prez story from Russell and Caldwell, a short story from the 2016 Catwoman: Election Night one-shot, and the original Prez Sneak Peek from 2015’s DC You publishing initiative.
Prez: Setting a Dangerous President arrives in all participating comic book shops, bookstores, and mass-market retailers and e-tailers on Tuesday, June 4.
