Thundercats, ho? More like, ThunderCats, holy s**t, as Dynamite has shared the upcoming ThunderCats #1 has broken 100,000 copies ordered by retailers, ahead of the title’s Final Order Cut-Off (FOC) date this weekend.
Written by Declan Shalvey with art by Drew Moss, this new ThunderCats is just the latest nostalgia-fueled reboot to capture the comic book industry’s imagination. Skybound and Image Comics’ Energon Universe, which launched with Void Rivals and continued with Transformers, Duke, and the upcoming Cobra Commander has sold big numbers in stores, and gone back for multiple printings. And now Dynamite is off to a good start with a suite of titles of their own, including ThunderCats, as well as multiple other licenses from Warner Bros. Those include Powerpuff Girls, Space Ghost, Flinstones, The Wizard of Oz and many more.
While Thundercats isn’t meant to launch an interconnected universe of titles a la the Energon Universe — at least not yet — it is bringing a modern, more serious sensibility to the classic ’80s cartoon. And clearly, retailers are hoping that this will be a big one, if they’re banking on over 100,000 copies in stores; the new threshold for success in the comic book industry.
