The Immortal Thor #5 Review:
Thor, Storm, Loki, and Beta Ray Bill are all harnessing the power of Mjolnir to fight the Utgarde Thor, aka the actual Thor from myth (and not the Marvel Comics one). By the end, they’ve found a clever way to beat him… But more dangers are on the horizon.
“I love this so much,” host Alex Zalben said. “The play on Norse Mythology is great. Martín Coccólo’s art is great… There’s one panel in particular of Loki happily swinging Mjolnir that is going to stick with me for a very long time.”
“It’s a crazy emotional roller coaster that is worth it,” added Pete LePage. In particular, he loved how the “team” beats the Utgarde Thor, something Zalben enjoyed as well.
“What this book is getting towards right now that mostly people miss is how myths actually work,” Zalben said. “People think something mythic is something epic and big and life-changing. And most of the time, it’s like, ‘Nope, we did a little trick. Goodbye.’ And that’s true with Greek myths. That’s true with Norse myths. is true with most myths where it’s usually these little… [morals] that [are] going on there.”
Continuing, Zalben said, “I’m really interested to see what his book becomes going forward. It seems like we’re going to have a Times Past style issue next issue focusing on an old tale of Thor and Loki. But where this goes [next]… This a great team art-wise, writing-wise… Very excited to follow it.”
