This is Comic Book Club News for November 6, 2023.

Frank Miller And Tom King Win Italian Comics Awards:

This past weekend was the well-attended Lucca Comics & Games 2023 convention in Tuscany, Italy. At the convention’s awards ceremony, some familiar names were lauded for their accomplishments.

As reported by Bleeding Cool, Frank Miller was given the Yellow Kid Master of Comics Hall of Fame award and will have his self-portrait hung next to previous winners in the Uffizi Galleries.

Writer Tom King was also a winner at the ceremony, for the Panini Comics edition of his DC Comic The Human Target. The 2021 co-created with artist Greg Smallwood was given the Gran Guinigi Best Script award.

Congratulations to Miller and King. Or as they say in Italy: good job.

Comic Books For Troops To Be Held On Veterans Day:

Love giving comic books to kids? Well, how about larger kids who are active in military service? That was a convoluted way to get to that thought, but ComicBooks For Kids is launching a ComicBooks For The Troops weekend, November 10-12.

The event, as reported by ICv2, is a nonprofit outreach program to get free comic books to those in active military service. As part of the push, the organization is hoping that retailers can offer discounts for those who want to sponsor comic books for military members. And as the org is a 501(c)3, donations are tax-deductible.

ComicBooks For Troops has already donated over 125,000 comics this year alone. While some listeners may scoff about this, there have been plenty of recent books that have presented thrilling superhero-style adventures while still dealing with what soldiers go through; from Junkyard Joe to The Dead Lucky and more. You can check out more info at https://www.comicbooksforkids.org/cb4thome. Maybe someone can buy them a better URL? I don’t know.

Jock’s GONE from DSTLRY Sells Out:

Jock’s GONE is gone. As previously reported by Comic Book Club News, the new title from bespoke publisher DSTLRY made a surprise showing on the October sales charts. And now, DSTLRY has made it official… GONE has sold out at the distributor level.

Said Jock via press release: “As my first whole-cloth comic that I’ve created, written, illustrated, and helped color, I couldn’t be more thankful for GONE’s reception. This is a true labor of love, and I can’t wait for retailers and readers to see where this cosmic tale will wind.”

I’m guessing he forgot to put “up” at the end of the sentence, but it’s the first book he’s written so we can forgive him. Regardless, if you’re eager to check out the book, it’s available for a hefty $20 on DSTLRY’s web store. Or you should be able to pick it up in shops. At least before it’s… Well, you know the rest.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And as they say in Italy: goodbye.
