Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Prequel Comic Coming From Titan

Zack Snyder‘s Rebel Moon is still months away from premiering on Netflix, and yet it’s expanding rapidly. What started life as a scuttled Star Wars project now has two movies on the streamer. Snyder is threatening director’s cuts of both. And now, a prequel comic coming from Titan Comics, with a new story by Snyder himself.

Titled Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe, the book is written by Mags Visaggio, with art by Clark Bint and colors by Francesco Segala. “I’m excited to collaborate with Mags to explore the rich and complex backstory of the Bloodaxe siblings,” Zack Snyder said via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “In Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe, fans will get to discover their motivation, as well as the genesis of the rebellion.”

The sci-fi saga focuses on a galaxy on the brink of war. But House of the Bloodaxe goes back five years to provide backstory for two key characters from the upcoming franchise. Those would be Devra and Darrian Bloodaxe, leaders of a band of outlaws. They’ll be played on screen by Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher. In comics, they will not be played by those people, because they’ll be drawings.

The four-issue series will be set on a planet called Shasu. There, the leader of the Bloodaxe* family is torn between living up to his father’s warlike legacy or maintaining peace. Pure speculation, but I don’t think he’s going to do the latter. Also curious how you get the last name Bloodaxe. Is that based on profession, or what?

“[It’s a] Shakespearean tragedy,” Visaggio said. “It’s all extremely personal, a family in conflict with its patriarch who is in conflict with himself at a moment when they need to be united. It’s a story about failure and the consequences of failure.”

Though the four-issue series is a prequel, it will actually come out after the first movie. Titled Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, that flick will hit Netflix on December 22. Meanwhile, the first issue of the prequel series will hit comic stores on January 10, 2024. It will presumably be released monthly. If so, that will lead right into the date of the second movie, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. That film will land on Netflix on April 19, 2024.
