Wonder Woman… Outlawed?

This is Comic Book Club News for September 19, 2023.

Moon Knight To Die And Then Immediately Return:

In what might be the quickest superhero resurrection of all time, Marvel’s heavily hyped Death of Moon Knight will lead directly into… The return of Moon Knight.

In the currently running arc of the book, Moon Knight will be killed off in issue #30, which will be released in December. Then the next month, Marvel will launch a new title, Vengeance of The Moon Knight, from the same creative team.

Said writer Jed McKay via press release: “MOON KNIGHT may be dying, but VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT rises, clawing itself from the grave! We’re thrilled to bring the next chapter of this saga to uneasy life as the Midnight Mission reels from a recent loss… and yet, Moon Knight still stalks the night time streets? Despite the apocalyptic events of MOON KNIGHT #28-30, we have plenty left to tell in the story of the Moon Knight, and I’m excited for readers to join us!”

To be fair, Marc Spector, the current Moon Knight, appears to be killed off in the end of the current series, to be replaced by a mysterious new Fist of Khonshu. But, pure speculation here, could this new Moon Knight be another personality of Spector’s? Particularly since the character got his start by dying and then being reborn by an Egyptian God? I don’t know, I just report this stuff.

The new series, which features art by Alessandro Cappuccio, launches January 3.

ORCS! To Come To A Close At BOOM!:

BOOM! Studios’ hit all-ages series ORCS! is coming to a close with a new series, Orcs! The Gift.

Said series creator Christine Larsen via press release: “I’m stoked to finally reach the culmination of this trilogy, where my characters are put to a true test, and I can test my own ability to balance the dramatic moments and the comedy of this series. I hope everyone enjoys this final arc as much as I’ve enjoyed crafting it.”

In the new series, orcs, elves and crows join together to fight the villainous Wolf King. The book comes from BOOM!’s YA imprint KaBOOM, and will hit stores on December 6.

Wonder Woman Goes Rogue In New Series:

In today’s just released issue of Wonder Woman by Tom King and Daniel Sampere, Wonder Woman gets a new status quo. Spoilers for the issue past this point.

The highly anticipated new series kicks off with what looks like the brutal murder of an entire bar full of men by an Amazon, on American soil. Due to what is labeled a terrorist attack, the United States cracks down on Amazons, breaking up their families and shipping them out of America. It’s a not particularly subtle metaphor for the war on terror and the cost it has had on hundreds of families. But it does result in that new status quo we mentioned.

Naturally, Wonder Woman isn’t having any of it, and believes the murders were a frame job. We, the reader know that it was, thanks to a new villain named The Sovereign… Who, based on the final panel of the issue, looks to be the King of America. However, by issues end not only is Wonder Woman public enemy number one, but Amazons are outlawed from the country.

This new world order will spin out throughout King and Sampere’s run, as well as the spinoff Amazons Attack series. Stay tuned for more on this story as it develops.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And as Leonardo DiCaprio once said, I’m the King of America! Eh, doesn’t have the same ring to it.
