This is Comic Book Club News for May 22, 2024.

Jonathan Hickman And Greg Capullo Take On Wolverine Miniseries:

Greg Capullo let slip a while back that he was working on Wolverine, and the popular assumption was Marvel’s new Wolverine ongoing. It turns out, it’s not. It’s actually a five-issue miniseries titled Wolverine: Revenge and it’s written by Jonathan Hickman.

Part of the ongoing 50th-anniversary celebration for the character, the series will pit Logan against Sabretooth, Omega Red, Deadpool and more — and like Blood Hunt before it, will be released in regular and Red Band editions, the latter of which is adults only.

In an exclusive quote to Polygon, Capullo said on his return to the House of Ideas: “I’ve finally returned home to Marvel, and I’m ready to raise some Hell. And, who better to do that with than the Hitman Hickman? To celebrate, Marvel has removed the fences and let us off our leash so that we can bring the most vicious and punishing Wolverine story possible to the fans this summer. I hope they’re prepared.”

Both versions of the story hit stores on August 21.

Scarlett #1 Reportedly Sells 80,000 Copies, Another Energon Hit:

Scarlett #1, the next series to hit from Skybound and Image Comics’ Energon Universe, seems to be yet another hit. According to a report from Bleeding Cool, the first issue of the Kelly Thompson written, Marco Ferrari drawn series has sold 80,000 copies to comic book stores.

The site doesn’t provide where it’s getting its numbers from, so take all this with a grain of salt. However, they do note that Transformers #1 sold over 200,000 copies, Void Rivals #1 is just under 200,000, and Cobra Commander #1 is close to 100,000 copies. Duke #1, meanwhile, passed 70,000 copies, making it the most successful G.I. Joe title since its 2001 relaunch.

Whether these numbers are accurate or not, it’s clear there’s a huge, continued demand for the Energon Universe titles, which bodes well for the upcoming Destro — as well as whatever G.I. Joe or other series pick up after those are wrapped at the end of the year. Scarlett #1 hits stores on June 5.

C.O.W.L. Returns from Image And Enters The Massive-Verse:

C.O.W.L., first released back in 2014, was a big hit from the team of Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel and Rod Reis. And now the book is coming back for a 10th-anniversary run — and entering the also successful Massive-Verse.

Titled C.O.W.L.: 1964, the series will follow the title’s superhero union going national, but not without problems.

Said Higgins via press release: “Returning to C.O.W.L. is very special for me. The series’ origins date back to my college thesis film, The League, and before that to the short story I wrote that got me into film school… Now, as we come back to finish the core story, we’ll also be setting the stage for the future of C.O.W.L. and in some ways, The Massive-Verse.”

The titles in the Massive-Verse including Radiant Black, Rogue Sun, and more all take place in the present day. So it’ll be interesting to see how this prequel fits into the ongoing narrative. The first issue will hit stores on August 14.
