DC Comics August 2024 Solicit Highlights:

As usual here on the podcast, we’re looking three months into the future to break down some of the more interesting titles from DC Comics’ August solicitations, aka the text and covers provided to comic book shops to help get pre-orders going.

That all kicks off with DC’s latest event, Absolute Power, which enters month two finding Amanda Waller triumphant and the heroes — and villains — of the DC Universe powerless. That includes the main title, which finds the bad guys attacking the Fortress of Solitude, two issues of Task Force VII focusing on Nightwing and The Flash, respectively, writer John Ridley continuing the origin of Amanda Waller in the appropriately titled Absolute Power: Origins, and spillover into ongoing issues of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. Whew!

Moving to something that has nothing to do with epic crossovers, as previously reported Tom King and Jeff Spokes are kicking off a six-issue Black Label series about The Authority character Jenny Sparks, aka the spirit of the 21st century, battling Captain Atom for mysterious reasons. Another out-of-continuity story? DC vs. Vampires returns right in the middle of Marvel’s Blood Hunt with a new six-issue mini titled World War V.

Also as previously reported, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn will temporarily be replaced in August by a four-issue weekly series titled Gotham City Sirens. All three ongoing titles will return in September, but in the meantime you can see the three Gotham anti-heroes battle shirtless hunks named the Nasty Boys. Seems fun!

Let’s talk about a few ending series. Jason Aaron and Doug Mahnke’s Batman: Off-World concludes with issue six in August, as Batman learns “a lesson in exploring the final frontiers of pain,” which I believe was the unofficial tagline for Star Trek 6. Green Lantern: War Journal also comes to an end with issue #12 of the series as John Stewart battles a bunch of old gods. And in the least surprising ending news, Justice Society of America, the long-delayed series from Geoff Johns who has since moved on to his own comics company, Ghost Machine, ends with issue number 12, as well.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And it’s weird, but I don’t think you ever see shirted hunks.
