This is Comic Book Club News for May 17, 2024.
2024 Eisner Awards Nominees Announced:
The 2024 Eisner Awards nominees have been announced, and nothing will ever be the same again! Or maybe it will, but the Oscars of comic books are here, and the top nominee was Image Comics, with 25 nominations. Number two was DC Comics, with 21 nominations.
They’re followed up by Fantagraphics with 11 nominations, First Second with 10, IDW with nine, Drawn & Quarterly with eight, and Marvel with eight. Meanwhile, Kelly Thompson was the most nominated creator, with five nominations, followed by Emily Carroll, Juano Guarnido, Bill Griffith, and Tom Taylor with three each.
But perhaps most important to the widest swathe of the audience possible: the award for best comics journalism, which was removed from the show four months ago, made a surprise return with five nominees that are inexplicably not this podcast, which is mostly me reading press releases. The nominees for that category are The Comics Journal, an article from The Beat, Rob Salkowitz, David Harper’s SKTCHD, and SOLRAD.
Next year’s gonna be my year. Just have to read the right press release at just the right time.
Rob Liefeld to Write And Draw Deadpool Team-Up For Marvel:
Per a press release from Marvel, we now know what Rob Liefeld’s final Deadpool story will be: a five-issue series titled Deadpool Team-Up.
Written and drawn by Liefeld, the book will team up the Merc With a Mouth with Major X, Crystar, Ghost-Spider, Wolverine, and the Incredible Hulk, all because of the re-emergence of a lost Marvel Comics character. I assume that means Millie the Model is back, but maybe not.
Liefeld previously promised he would deliver one more story about Wade Wilson while he was still feeling confident in his artistic abilities, before hanging up the Deadpool costume forever. The book will hit August 28, 2024, and I can smell the Eisner nom coming right off this news item.
Charles Burns Final Cut To Be Published By Pantheon:
Final Cut, the first graphic novel from creator Charles Burns in a decade, will be published by Pantheon later this year. And not only is this the first graphic novel Burns has published since Sugar in 2014, it’s the first standalone graphic novel – i.e., not part of a series – he’s published in English since the seminal 2005 Black Hole.
Per the title, the book deals with a filmmaker who reunites with his childhood buddy and others to film a sci-fi horror movie in a remote cabin. Things get twisted up when the filmmaker starts using his movie to fantasize about the unreciprocated affections of one of the participants.
The book was previously published in French under the title Dédales and will come hot on the heels of Kommix, a collection of comic book covers that never existed that will be published this July. Final Cut will hit stores on September 24, 2024.
