Simu Liu Promises Shang-Chi Is Coming Back: “It’s Happening”

A month ago we reported that Shang-Chi 2 potentially seemed to be moving closer to production, after years of silence from Disney and Marvel Studios on the potential project. And now, star Simu Liu is adding a tiny bit of fuel to that fire.

Yesterday (April 14) on Threads, a fan posted a picture of Liu in the 2021 movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, expressing some serious frustration about the lack of news. “I feel like Marvel has abandoned the Shang-Chi fan base. There has been no effort by the studio to get the sequel filming or even include the character in other Marvel films. Frustrating as hell.”

To which Liu responded, “I proooomiss it’s happening.”

That’s pretty much the long and the short of it. But Liu has been pretty open over the years about his own frustrations with the lack of news/a sequel announcement. And we’re right there with him. Despite opening during peak pandemic times, Shang-Chi was a relative box office success and a critical one as well. Director/writer Destin Daniel Cretton made enough of an impression on Marvel to nab the role directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Cretton has since amicably left the project to concentrate on Disney+’s upcoming Wonder Man series as well as Shang-Chi 2. But the fact remains that Shang-Chi is generally seen as a success, so the lack of sequel announcement is surprising.

That said, to throw a little cold water on this: Liu does not specify what is “happening.” Given Disney has promised to contract Marvel’s output to focus up the studio, this could mean Shang-Chi will show up in either Avengers 5 or Avengers: Secret Wars. Or even as a cameo in Cretton’s Wonder Man. But with Production Weekly listing a 2025 start date for Shang-Chi 2, we previously speculated Disney’s Untitled Marvel movies on February 13, 2026, July 24, 2026, or November 6, 2026, could be the Shang-Chi sequel. Is that equally possible?

All we know: it’s happening. Whatever “it” is.
