The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux is here, and the world is not prepared. The sequel to the blockbuster 2019 hit stars Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker, Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. And oh yeah, it’s a musical.
When the first film, Joker, came out it was divisive — to say the least. Director Todd Phillips was clearly aping classic ’70s and ’80s Scorsese movies, particularly Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, in his reimagined origin for the Batman villain. In the flick, Phoenix played Arthur Fleck, a terrible comedian who is driven to extremes because he Lives In A Society. He also danced on some stairs at one point and is possibly Bruce Wayne’s brother.
At the end of the movie, Fleck murdered a popular TV host on live TV, started a riot, and ended up in Arkham Asylum. Alternately none of that happened, and Fleck imagined that he was suddenly popular just because he had Become The Joker.
The sequel brings back Phoenix and adds Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, aka the woman who is corrupted by The Joker to become his right-hand-woman, Harley Quinn. Zazie Beetz also returns as Fleck’s next-door neighbor, Sophie Dumond. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Steve Coogan, and more also star in the movie, which was once again co-written and directed by Phillips.
Most importantly, the movie reportedly contains 15 songs, including covers of “That’s Entertainment!” and some originals that include Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score.
