Is [SPOILER] Really Dead On Invincible? What We Know From The Comics

Invincible Season 2 Episode 5 Rex-Splode and Dupli-Kate

Spoilers past this point, but the return of Invincible on Prime Video was a blood-bath. In Season 2, Episode 5, “This Must Come As A Shock,” the episode ended with Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow) ripped in half, Shrinking Rae (Grey Griffin) swallowed, and Rex-Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) about to be executed. But is Dupli-Kate really dead? What about Shrinking Rae?

Naturally, we’ll have to wait for the rest of Season 2 — and perhaps the currently in production Season 3 — for the real answer. But given we’ve seen resurrections on the show, even in this very episode, there’s still hope these characters can make it out alive.

We’ve also, thankfully, got extensive source material in the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. So with that in mind, let’s do a brief recap of what went down in this week’s episode — and then what we know about Dupli-Kate’s fate from the comics.

Invincible Season 2, Episode 5 “This Must Come As A Shock” Recap:

Invincible Season 2 Episode 5 Komodo Dragon vs Dupli-Kate

In the episode, the Guardians of the Globe are facing two threats at the same time. Most of the team, plus Invincible (Steven Yeun) and Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs) head to space to deal with the Sequids, brain-controlling squids from Mars heading to Earth. That leaves Rex-Splode in charge, and Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae chilling with him and ordering pizza.

Only problem? The Lizard League attacks. And while the pissed-off Rex-Splode actually comes up with a pretty good plan to take them down, the trio is quickly overpowered by the League… Particularly Komodo Dragon (Jay Pharoah), who proceeds to rip apart Dupli-Kate’s dupes, one by one. In fact, he’s holding her so tightly that she’s unable to duplicate herself at all, and in a horrific moment, he rips the final dupe in half.

Komodo Dragon gets attacked by Shrinking Rae, but he grabs her and swallows her. You know what’s going to happen next, right? And in fact, Rae does try to grow large and blow him up… But it doesn’t work. The villain instead keeps her inside and seemingly digests her. Horrifying!

Last but not least, Rex-Splode has lost one of his hands, and gives up, telling the leader of the Lizard League, King Lizard (Scott McNairy) that he can just kill him. So we leave Rex-Splode bleeding to death, about to be shot in the back of the head. Yikes!

Is Dupli-Kate Dead On Invincible? What We Know From The Comics:

So on screen given her final, #1 dupe is in two pieces, it certainly looks like Dupli-Kate is dupli-dead. However, if you want some spoilers from the comic books which may or may not be captured on screen — and you probably do, because you’re reading this very paragraph right now — here’s what happens.

Dupli-Kate does indeed die in the comics, or at least her dupe does. A funeral is thrown for her, and The Immortal (Ross Marquand) is distraught. Turns out it wasn’t just a sexual relationship between the two, he really loved her deeply. He leaves the Guardians of the Globe in Invincible #46, which was published in November 2007.

It’s only when he commits himself to a life of solitude in a snowy mountain cabin that the truth comes out… The Dupli-Kate we’ve seen so far was never the original Dupli-Kate. In fact, after a close call, Kate decided to always live life through one of her copies, and since they all share a consciousness she was still able to live and feel everything the dupes were feeling.

Not only that, but she has a brother with similar powers who uses the name Multi-Paul… And he’s in trouble.

So there you go! Dupli-Kate is alive and well in the comic books, at least. As for the show? TBD.

Invincible 46 Dupli-Kate death still alive
