Marvel’s X-Men Plans To Be Announced At SXSW:

Our first story today is news about news: Marvel’s upcoming X-Men plans will finally be unveiled this Thursday, March 14 at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

On the fourteenth, Marvel will be holding a panel titled “The Future of Marvel Comics’ X-Men and Digital Comics,” which will feature guests Tom Brevoort, C.B. Cebulski, Dan Crothers, Jed MacKay and Gail Simone.

Here’s the official blurb for the panel vis SXSW: “Join Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and VP, Executive Editor Tom Brevoort to be the first to learn what’s coming next for Marvel’s X-Men comics this summer—when everything you know about mutantkind will change in X-Men: From the Ashes! Hear directly from some of today’s most influential and groundbreaking comic book creators on how they plan to evolve the X-Men mythos and launch this new era. And in a broader conversation about the evolution of print and digital comics, join Marvel and the leaders of the revolutionary technology and digital collectibles platform VeVe to discuss how the intersection of storytelling and tech are coming together in some exciting new ways in 2024.”

VeVe is a whole NFTs thing, which I guess we’re still doing? But as SXSW is technically a tech-focused festival, it makes some sense to feature talk about that. I guess.

Anyway, as previously reported on this podcast, Brevoort is the editor taking over the X-Men line, starting in July — though some titles will be dropping earlier as part of the Blood Hunt event. For several months, it’s been an open secret that Gail Simone is involved in the X-Men relaunch in some way, and will be writing a Jubilee story for the upcoming Free Comic Book Day issue.

Jed MacKay is the interesting, though perhaps not surprising twist here. Currently, MacKay is the guy behind Avengers, Moon Knight and others. With Brevoort heading to the X-Men office, it would make sense he would be taking MacKay with him, too.

For their parts, MacKay and Simone both were having fun teasing the announcement with posts on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. MacKay simply Xeeted, “Headed to S X SW next week for some Marvel stuff!” Meanwhile, Simone posted a longer xeet with multiple capitalized “X”es.

More on this later on this week.

My Adventures With Superman Gets A Spinoff Comic From DC:

If you’re a fan of My Adventures With Superman, the anime-inspired series that aired its first season on Adult Swim, we’ve got some great news: the show is headed to DC for a spinoff comic. Finally. A comic about Superman.

All jokes aside, the new story will be based on an unused plot from Season 1 of the series, though it will be set after the end of Season 1, and before Season 2, as reported by Polygon. Even better, the comic will be written by Josie Campbell, who has previously written New Champion of Shazam and Amazons Attack for DC — and is the head writer for My Adventures With Superman.

Said Campbell, “Get ready for romance, comedy, super-powers, Jimmy Olsen talking a lot about how he’s super-rich now, and all the goodness of the show bundled into this action-packed miniseries.”

The first issue, with art by Pablo M. Collar, will hit stores on June 4.

Zatanna Black Label Series Announced By DC:

And here’s another fun-sounding DC series that was recently announced: writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Javier Rodriguez are collaborating on a new Black Label series titled Zatanna: Bring Down The House.

As reported by Popverse, the book will find Zatanna returning to her roots in Vegas when a demon portal opens up in town. Said Tamaki, “[I’m] very excited for people to see this weird little story we’ve whipped up for their reading pleasure. There is nothing more fun than working on a character like Zatanna who, issue after issue, invites you to explore every nook and cranny of the language of comics.”

The Black Label line as a whole has been a big success for DC, and allowing two creators like Tamaki and Rodriguez to go wild with the publisher’s most magical character makes this easily one of the most anticipated titles of the year. The first issue hits on June 25, 2024.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. I guess it makes sense they would announce the X-Men news in Austin, because all my X-Men’s live in Tex-mans. Am I right? No?
