Image Comics announces retailer appreciation award.

Venom War is coming to Marvel.

Gillen and Wijngaard launch The Power Fantasy.

This is Comic Book Club News for March 4, 2024.

Image Comics Has Announced Retailer Appreciation Award Winner:

Image Comics has announced the winner of their first-ever Retailer Appreciation Award at this past weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con. That winner? Nirvana Comics from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Said Grant and Jasmine Mitchell, co-owners of the store, in a statement via press release: “This is such a huge honor. Thank you Image Comics for all you’ve done to help the comic shop industry. Thank you to all our customers who nominated us. Your support and friendship is why we do this everyday. The best is yet to come!”

The Image Select Retailer Award is an attempt by the publisher to recognize stores that go above and beyond — and presumably to encourage other stores to do the same. The criteria for the winning store was as follows: exemplary customer service; thoughtful and exciting hand-selling recommendations; efforts fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere; easy-to-browse shelving; attractive and innovative displays; forward-thinking customer marketing and out-of-box consumer outreach; community engagement; and robust inventory of & support for Image Comics and other creator-owned/indie comics.

Oh, isn’t that interesting, they have to sell Image Comics, well, well, well.

Nirvana Comics will receive the following for winning: a commemorative medallion to display with pride; a spotlight Q&A to be featured on Image Comics’ social media platforms and Website; and the store’s choice of a gold foil exclusive variant, branded as an Image Select Retailer Award winner, with store logo (limited to 250 copies).

Congrats to Nirvana Comics!

Marvel Announces Venom War Event:

Marvel is about to kick off a four-part crossover this week pitting Carnage against Venom. But faster than you can say “goop, there it is,” the publisher has announced another Venom-focused crossover: Venom War, which will pit Venom against Venom.

Kicking off in August, the event will find Eddie Brock battling his son Dylan to be the last Venom standing. It will be written by Al Ewing with art by Iban Coello, with symbiotes backing up the two Venoms on either side. While Venom fans are more likely to identify the monstrous characters, of note Anti-Venom is on the side of one of the Venoms and Black Widow, who currently wears a symbiote suit, is on the other side.

This harkens back to classic Marvel series like Civil War, which challenged readers to choose an ideological side between Captain America and Iron Man. Here, you get to choose between whether you want to see a father beat up his son, or a son beat up his father, which is… Similar?

So whose side are you on? Venom? Or Venom?

Kieron Gillen And Caspar Wijngaard Team Up For The Power Fantasy:

And now, back to Emerald City Comic Con for another announcement: writer Kieron Gillen and artist Caspar Wijngaard are teaming up for a new comic titled The Power Fantasy.

The book focuses on six superpowered beings who exist on Earth, and how the fate of the world hangs on them deciding to never fight.

Said Gillen in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter: “The Power Fantasy emerged in a similar way to The Wicked + The Divine. I was doing a book at Marvel, and became aware of exactly the sort of things I could do with the reins taken off. As The Wicked + The Divine was to Young Avengers, this is to Immortal X-Men. It’s a comic informed by superheroes, but one where a fight is the absolute lose state, for everyone. It’s set from 1945-1999, and so is a chance to really have fun with an alternate cultural history too.”

The book will hit stores this August from Image Comics.
