New month, new comics. And while this week is overall a light one for most publishers when it comes to new comics, Marvel is publishing a whopping 17 new issues, so let’s get into what’s hitting stores on March 5, 2024, and March 6, 2024.
Given the pace the House of Ideas has been going you’ve got to wonder if Marvel owes someone money. Because this week alone they’ve got big issues like Ultimate X-Men #1 by Peach Momoko, sure to be a singular take on the franchise, and What If…? Aliens #1, a wild take on James Cameron’s movie created in part by none other than Paul Reiser. Not only that, star of stage and screen, but just screen, Iman Vellani returns to co-write Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #1. And then there are 14 more books beyond that!
Don’t worry, DC’s got some fun stuff, too. The Bat-Man: First Knight is an intriguing Black Label book from Dan Jurgens and Mike Perkins taking a second look at Batman’s early big ear days. Meanwhile, Chip Zdarsky does his best to murder Batman in the present in Batman #145, as the big “Dark Prisons” storyline kicks off with Bruce in — where else — prison.
Looking at other publishers, I personally highly recommend The Last Mermaid from Image Comics, a gorgeous book about a mermaid in a watery mech suit traveling the post-apocalyptic landscape with her axolotl companion. Void Rivals is back for its second arc, and it will be interesting to see how it weaves back into the tightly plotted Energon Universe. And don’t miss Night People #1 from Oni Press, a fever dream of a comic if there ever was one.
The biggest one, though, is probably IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution #1. The official sequel to the first book, which has been a massive hit in single issues and trades is sure to dominate stores, once again.
