Is Amazon Already Prepping The Boys Season 5?

The Boys - The Name Of The Game

We still don’t have a premiere date for Amazon Prime Video‘s hit series The Boys Season 4. So you know what it’s time for! Speculation about The Boys Season 5, which may already be getting ready to go into production.

The news comes via Production Weekly, an industry trade made available to those working behind the scenes to seek out jobs. In the latest issue, PW lists The Boys Season 5 is in prep mode in Toronto as of January 11, 2024. What does that mean? Put simply, while Amazon hasn’t announced The Boys Season 5 as of yet, there’s a good chance they’re already getting ready to start production on the season sometime this year. And in fact, in the February 7 issue of the weekly, it looks like production may be targeting April 8, 2024 as the start date.

Which, you know, isn’t a huge surprise. The Boys has been an enormous hit for Amazon, and even spawned two successful spinoffs — the animated Diabolical, as well as the live-action Gen V. And reportedly a third, Spanish version of The Boys is also in the works. So even with Season 4 yet to hit our streaming airwaves, it makes sense that they’d want to push ahead with Season 5.

It makes even more sense when you realize that production on Season 4 wrapped almost a year ago at this point. Production on Season 4 ran for a surprisingly long period, starting on August 22, 2022, and running through April 12, 2023. The season was seemingly meant to be released later in 2023, but with the SAG and WGA-AFTRA strikes, showrunner Eric Kripke and company held off on the release.

The Boys Season 5 Writing Could Have Started Last Year

However, that doesn’t mean they haven’t already started writing Season 5. Streamers like Prime Video have a habit of starting up writers’ rooms without a publically announced pickup of the series. The WGA strike ended on September 27, 2023, meaning potentially Kripke and crew could have hopped back into writing Season 5 around then. That could line up with the prep date we mentioned above, as well as a potential production date later this year. Previous seasons have started filming in May, June and July, so it’s possible things could ramp up then.

In fact, Kripke seemed to tease a fifth season last year in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Cause you’re asking! We’ve been shooting since late August. I’m here to prep & direct the Season 4 finale. No, not the series finale, there will be more! Most importantly, S4 premieres… at some point in the future in our discernible reality.”

That certainly sounds like a man who knows he’s already got a fifth season in the works if you ask me.

Obviously, this is all pure speculation based on one listing and a tweet, so take it with a grain of salt. However, to take it one step further, if The Boys Season 5 is indeed already a go, chances are they could announce the Season 4 premiere date and Season 5 pickup all at the same time. Until that does happen, though, there’s plenty to look forward to with Season 4: the return of Black Noir, Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s new character, and so much more.

This piece has been updated to reflect the potential April 8 start date for The Boys Season 5.
