Giant-Size Spider-Man #1 Review:

Miles Morales takes on the new Venom in this over-sized issue. Not only that, it’s the first of many Giant-Size issues hitting this year, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the nomenclature.

“I liked this issue,” offered host Alex Zalben. “But it didn’t quite pay off on the Giant-Size premise for me.”

Justin Tyler agreed, saying, “I wouldn’t call this big, character-changing events. But one thing that it gave me that I hadn’t seen before is there’s a section that talks about how Miles Morales has been in therapy and really thinking about how his powers work. And it’s changing the way his Spidey sense works… I love that. I hadn’t had that sort of forward-thinking perspective on a power set like this, and I was very into that side of it. The Venom stuff I thought was fine. I wish we got more about the young, almost Shazam style of Venom. [He’s] a venom that isn’t really in control. He’s a kid, the symbiote seems to just run over him. From a who’s in charge perspective, I would like to see more of that at play rather than, it felt like just a standard Venom’s losing control, his tongue is licking stuff issue.”

Pete LePage also liked the bit about Miles’s Spidey sense, as well as generally establishing Miles is in therapy, and “getting to know your own self a bit, what it means.” But other than that, he enjoyed the “classic team-up,” as well as the art and writing.
