Star Wars: Dark Droids #5 Review:
In the final issue of the Dark Droids event, The Scourge attempts to take over all flesh in the Star Wars galaxy. This takes place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, so take your best guess if the villain is successful or not.
Kicking things off, host Justin Tyler said, “This is what Star Wars comics should really be doing, and maybe even future TV shows and whatnot, is finding places where they can actually tell a new story where it doesn’t feel like we know the outcome. This crossover in general did a good job of telling an interesting story. Touching on this Star Wars universe we know but really expanding out into droid philosophy.”
That said, Tyler found the wrap-up a little quick, but “otherwise enjoyed” the crossover.
Pete LePage agreed, adding that it was a “cool exploration of an idea” particularly how in this final issue the action goes places you don’t think the Star Wars universe can go. “A great rollercoaster ride,” said LePage.
Alex Zalben was particularly impressed with the job Soule did with The Scourge as a villain, exploring the idea of what happens when he spreads his consciousness over hundreds, or thousands of different beings. “It starts to get fractured by the end and starts to question what it’s doing.” He also thought the exploration of droid religion was “really fascinating… There’s a lot more stories they can tell in the Star Wars universe that don’t have anything to do with the Skywalkers.”
