It’s a new year, and there are plenty of new Image Comics to enjoy in January 2024. Not only do we have a big expansion of the hit Energon Universe, but Geoff Johns and company are kicking off their Ghost Machine co-op imprint, as well. Plus other titles! So let’s get into it, and break down 13 titles we’re anticipating this month.
1. Transformers #4
Release Date: January 10, 2024
Comic Book Club’s best comic book of 2023 is back with a brand new issue right at the top of the month, and it’ll probably continue to top that list for months to come. Action-packed, emotional, writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson is knocking this out of the park.
2. Swan Songs #6
Release Date: January 10, 2024
The final issue of W. Maxwell Prince’s series about endings brings in his Ice Cream Man collaborator Martín Morazzo for a crossover issue with ICM that also parodies Shel Silverstein. And they say the perfect comic book doesn’t exist.
4. Adventureman: Ghost Lights #1
Release Date: January 10, 2024
Matt Fraction is back with the Dodsons’ on this throwback adventure series. And yes, this was on our list of most anticipated Image Comics of December. But it didn’t actually come out then, so here it is, back again! Still anticipating it!
5. Cobra Commander #1
Release Date: January 17, 2024
Hey, have we mentioned this Energon Universe thing yet? Because so far it hasn’t missed, and this title brings on the bad guy(s) with a horror-inspired miniseries from Joshua Williamson and Andrea Milana. The preview pages in Duke #1 looked great, and I can’t wait to see what happens next with ol’ snake eyes.
6. The Enfield Gang Massacre #6
Release Date: January 17, 2024
The spinoff of That Texas Blood concludes this month with an issue that — if you’ve been reading the backmatter — is sure to be tragic. If you’re a fan of Westerns and action (and tragedy), this is a series you do not want to miss.
7. The Weatherman #1
Release Date: January 17, 2024
Jody LeHeup and Nathan Fox return to their wild sci-fi story about a weatherman in over his head for a third, concluding volume of the series. We were big fans of this back in the day, so can’t wait to see how it all concludes.
8. The Colonized: Zombies vs. Aliens #1
Release Date: January 17, 2024
If you weren’t sold on the title alone, this 96-page giant comes from writer Chris Ryall and artist Drew Moss, promising twists, turns and yes, zombies versus aliens.
9. Ghost Machine #1
Release Date: January 24, 2024
Ghost Machine is a brand new co-op imprint published through Image Comics that is promising big things, including four entirely new interconnected universes. Luckily, they have the talent to back it up, including Geoff Johns, Brad Metzler, Peter J. Tomasi, Francis Manapul, Ivan Reis, Bryan Hitch, Gary Frank and a ton more. This one-shot looks to set up those universes, and announce Ghost Machine as a force to be reckoned with.
10. Fire Power #30
Release Date: January 31, 2024
Robert Kirkman and Chris Samnee’s martial arts epic ends this issue with an oversized 56 pages. Will they be able to beat the giant dragon threatening to destroy the world? And will it involve fireballs of some sort?? We’ll just have to read to find out.
11. The Cull #5
Release Date: January 31, 2024
Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis’s YA meets superpowers meets Eldritch horrors mash-up concludes with this issue, just as it seems to be getting started. Still, given the pitch perfect first four issues, I fully expect this one will stick the landing.
12. Local Man #9
Release Date: January 31, 2024
Tony Fleecs and Tim Seeley are doing things you’ve never seen before in a mainstream comic book. This is not hyperbole: last issue the main character, in a psychedelic haze, wandered through the ads in the back of the book, then through the back-up story, until he figured out the mystery that’s been plaguing him all series long. This series is mind-blowingly creative, hilarious, and includes some great action and horror as well. If this isn’t on your pull list: why not?
13. Moon Man #1
Release Date: January 31, 2024
Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi has been all over the place lately, and now he’s making his comic book debut. Thankfully he has a great team of veterans working with him on this story of a moon mission gone wrong: Kyle Higgins assists on writing, and Marco Locati is on art.
