Usually, when a trade outlet like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, or Deadline puts out a report, there’s at least a germ of truth to it. Versus rumor sites, these articles need to be vetted through legal and confirmed by multiple sources. So it’s pretty weird that THR Pom Klementieff is joining James Gunn‘s Superman Legacy… A fact Gunn flat-out denied.
In the THR article, which has since been amended and corrected, the outlet exclusively revealed that Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy cohort Klementieff would be joining the cast of the upcoming Superman reboot, along with Miriam Shor, who appeared as the Recorder in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. Given Gunn likes to work with the same actors repeatedly, it wasn’t too far a stretch to think the duo would be in the movie, which is officially kicking off Gunn’s new DC Universe.
However, Gunn took to Threads to completely shut down the article.
“Despite Pom being one of my favorite actors to work with, this is 100% not true,” Gunn posted. “Not only is Pom not in the movie, but no one has ever even discussed her being in the movie, nor do I have any idea what role she would possibly play.”
THR has since amended the article to reveal that Shor has been cast, while removing Klementieff from contention. And for Gunn’s part, he hasn’t denied that Shor is in the movie. That said, he did follow up with a question about why he debunked this particular report when he’s let other rumors percolate on the internet.
Why Did James Gunn Respond To The Pom Klementieff Rumor?
“I don’t debunk immediately normally,” Gunn replied. “The Miriam rumor has been around for a while & I haven’t said anything – not to mention some other untrue rumors going around. But in this case, a Guardian actor, & the story coming from a respectable publication, I felt I needed to say something (also, a confused Pom was the one to send it to me so I wanted it out of the mind of folks as quickly as possible for her sake – otherwise she’ll be asked about it at every con & interview for the next two years.)”
Gunn has been extremely active on social media, interacting with fans and turning his every post on Threads, Instagram, and beyond into mini news items (you know, like this one!), but it’s still surprising to see him swiftly shut down a report from a trade. For THR‘s part, they haven’t made a statement on why or where this info came from… Perhaps Klementieff is being considered or locked in for another role in the new DCU, and the sources got confused?
The cast of Superman Legacy is pretty packed already, anyway. David Corenswet is playing Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult officially joined the cast as Lex Luthor. Rounding out the cast are Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern. Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio and Sean Gunn have also reportedly joined the cast, with Gisondo rumored to play Jimmy Olsen, Sampaio Lex’s right-hand woman Miss Tesmacher, and Gunn as businessman Maxwell Lord.
Shor’s role — if she is indeed cast — is right now unknown.
