Fables #160 review header

Fables is swiftly coming to an end, with only two more issues left in Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham‘s epic fairy tale mash-up.

We reviewed the book on the Stack podcast. But in the interest of highlighting more about the title, here’s a summary of the conversation with our thoughts. And if you prefer the longer audio version, that’s below as well!

Fables #160 Review:

Though this obviously isn’t reflected in the comic, Fables #160 is the first issue of the series that’s come out since Bill Willingham dropped the bomb that he’s releasing Fables into the public domain. Can he do that? DC disagrees, and regardless the series is supposed to end — again — with issue #162.

Host Alex Zalben felt that “it’s very strange reading this book,” after everything that has happened. “It’s sad. It’s disappointing.”

Justin Tyler agreed, and added, “This is one of the most consistent titles that has come out in decades. This continues to be a great story… I worry for Bigby [Wolf], in all of these issues, especially if these are the last two.”

Zalben disagreed, however, saying that he loves Mark Buckingham’s art… But “I still don’t quite understand the direction of this new arc.”

Noting that most of the issue was taken up with a “cool” fight between Bigby Wolf and Peter Pan, he continued, “I always feel like with this book we’re cutting in at, here’s a snapshot of this world for a couple of pages, see you next month… It doesn’t have the same forward momentum as when Geppetto was the main villain of the book. And this is true of the main run of Fables as well. It lost that inertia once the battle for Fabletown was done, and it just kept going. So we’ll see how it wraps up here.”

Pete LePage took exception to that. He fired back, “Stop f-ing with the Hams, bro, because they do nothing but create an amazing story here… I don’t know what’s more exciting than a giant wolf eating a f**king dude, just straight up eating people out here.”
