Scott Pilgrim like the title character of the books, is almost 20 years old. The series by Bryan Lee O’Malley is able to officially drink alcohol in Canada, and next year it’s one step closer to being able to drink in the United States. But you didn’t come here to find out the drinking age in various countries… You want to know how many Scott Pilgrim books are there.
Good news, then, we’re going to answer that question in this very article. However, the answer is slightly more complicated than it might seem on the surface. The reason? Various releases of the Oni Press books, as well as spinoff stories may or may not be available in the collected volumes. So let’s run it down, shall we?
How Many Scott Pilgrim Books Are There?
The short answer to this question is there are six volumes of Scott Pilgrim that were originally published by Oni Press. All six volumes were published between 2004, and 2010. [Pirate voice] Here be their names!
- Volume 1: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life
- Volume 2: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
- Volume 3: Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite Sadness
- Volume 4: Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together
- Volume 5: Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe
- Volume 6: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour
Wait, What Is Scott Pilgrim About?
Okay, before we get back to the whole “how many books are there” issue, let’s discuss the plot of Scott Pilgrim. In the books, Scott Pilgrim is a regular dude with no job, living in his friend Wallace’s one-bedroom apartment. Enter Ramona Flowers, an Amazon.ca delivery girl who can travel through subspace pathways and thoroughly enchants Scott. They begin dating, but he quickly discovers she has seven evil exes he must defeat in battle if he wants to continue dating her.
So yeah, it’s a wild mashup of romance comics, video games, comic book tropes, epic battles, musical performances, and much more. All framed around Scot and Ramona’s relationship, and how it develops. All written and drawn by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the book doesn’t shirk on the reality of human feelings, in between all the bonkers comedy swings. As Oni Press head Hunter Gorinson recently told Comic Book Club at Baltimore Comic Con, there is nothing like Scott Pilgrim.
Okay, Back To The Whole How Many Scott Pilgrim Books Are There Thing:
During the initial release of the Scott Pilgrim series, there were a number of other short stories and one-shots released. If you can track them down, they exist in Comics Festival (2005), Free Scott Pilgrim No. 1 (2006), Comics Festival 2007!, and Scott Pilgrim Full Colour Odds & Ends 2008.
After the initial release of the series, the books have been reprinted multiple times. Starting in 2012, various color editions — the book was initially (mostly) released in black and white — were released in two forms. Both were larger than the manga digest-sized originals, and both were in full color with bonus materials. The publicly released versions are labeled “Color Edition.” The other version, which was only released at comic conventions and through the Oni Press website is labeled “Evil Edition” and features Ramona’s evil exes on the cover.
But wait, that’s not all! In 2019, Oni Press once again released Scott Pilgrim, this time called the Scott Pilgrim Color Collection. Released over the course of three volumes or as a box set of all three, each volume contains two books. Per the name, they’re in full color.
So there you have it! Short answer, there are six books in the Scott Pilgrim series. Long answer, there are a lot of options depending on how you want to read it. I recommend you start with the OG black and white editions and go from there.
